Recap / Hudson And Rex S 3 E 14 The Secret Life Of Levi

Go To

After Jesse' s close friend vanishes, Charlie and Rex discover the man was living two separate lives.

Tropes:

  • Chekhov's Gunman:
    • The guy Jesse first talks to at the gamer café at the beginning of the episode and then again after finding a mysterious flash drive underneath one of the consoles, with the former being oddly interested in it. He's Armie's ex-partner Hector Hughes, who had been searching for him ever since Armie went into hiding with the stolen money.
    • Also the guy who runs the chop shop the car used to kidnap Levi is found in. He's Hector's cousin Dale, who was recruited by Hector to help kidnap Armie and get the Bitcoins back.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: Levi's real name is Armie Modi, a man wanted in Halifax for the grand larceny of thousands of dollars in Bitcoin and has spent the last seven years in hiding from his ex-partner who betrayed him. Meanwhile, the real Levi Gill died in a boating accident with his body never being found. Rainey met Armie when she found him impersonating her husband, leading to them making a deal where the two would help each other out with their own respective problems (Armie with hiding and Rainey with paying her medical bills and raising Scout).
  • Greed: Hector convinced and then forced Armie to help him rob Hector's workplace under the promise that the money would be split between them, until Armie found out that Hector was planning to double-cross him and keep it all for himself, prompting Armie to betray him first and go into hiding. Hector clearly learned nothing from that incident, because when he tracked Armie down seven years later to get the money back and kill him, he decided he wanted the prize money from the video game tournament too and forced Armie at gunpoint to win it for him before killing him (which wasn't necessary by that point due to getting both amounts of money, but Hector's ego was too bruised to let Armie live), giving the Major Crimes team time to figure out what was going on and rescue Armie. Even Hector’s own cousin whom he roped into helping knew it was a better idea to just stop at getting the Bitcoins back before the police closed in on them. By the end of the investigation, Charlie and Jesse are practically making fun of Hector for how much he let his greed get the better of him.
Hector: I should've just killed him and called it a day...
Jesse: You should've stayed in Halifax.
  • Hypocrite: Hector accusing Armie of ripping him off during the robbery, despite Hector’s plans of betraying Armie first to keep all the money for himself.
  • Living a Double Life: The episode’s plot involves Jesse's friend Levi Gill being abducted on his way home from the gaming café the previous night training for an upcoming video game tournament, with the investigation revealing that Levi had been leading two separate lives: one with his pregnant fiancé and Jesse's other friend Bonnie Squire, and another with a woman named Rainey and her daughter Scout. Bonnie was the first to find out days prior when the courthouse informed her that Levi was already legally married, with her being too furious to hear Levi out when he claimed the situation was "complicated." He was telling the truth. Levi aka Armie struck a deal with Rainey to help each other with their respective problems, with Rainey letting Armie use her dead husband's identity while Armie helped Rainey raise her daughter. Unfortunately, Armie's ex-partner Hector Hughes eventually found him via a digital trail left by using the gaming café's Bitcoin ATM with the intention of getting the money back and killing him.
  • Smug Snake: Hector in spades. Part of the reason he spent so long tracking down Armie and wanting to kill him was because he couldn’t stand Armie duping him. He's also arrogant enough to think that the police won't be able to trace his cybercrimes back to him and that they would believe Armie to be the real mastermind behind them until Charlie and Jesse prove him horribly wrong, with the two taking turns ripping out Hector’s massive ego and beating him with it during the interrogation.
  • Too Dumb to Live:
    • As Charlie and Jesse point out, Armie should've known better than to use the Bitcoin ATM at the gaming café, which created a digital trail that allowed Hector to track him down.
    • Jesse shouting from getting so wrapped up in the game while he, Charlie and Rex are trying to rescue Armie from Hector and Dale, which gets him captured and almost killed by them.
  • Villain Ball: Had Hector simply kept his word about splitting the money with Armie, the two of the them would’ve likely gotten away with it with no problems whatsoever. Instead, he let his greed get way out of control, which led to Hector shooting himself in the foot several times and his eventual arrest.
