Ted finally finds The Slutty Pumpkin, but things aren't as magical between the two as they remember. Barney discovers that he is one quarter Canadian.

This episode provides examples of:

  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: Robin wastes no time in ribbing Barney about his Canadian heritage. In one episode, she probably hits him with as many Canada jokes as he's served her in the past seven seasons.
  • Awkward Kiss: Ted finally kisses Naomi (the girl in The Slutty Pumpkin outfit he met years ago at a Halloween party years ago), only to be disgusted afterwards.
  • Call-Back: After Ted tells Robin and Barney that he blurted an "I Love You" to Naomi instead of breaking up with her, Barney said "Classic Schmosby", like Punchy did in "The Best Man''.
  • Color Me Black: After all his derision of Canada, it's fitting that Barney turns out to be part Canadian.
  • Continuity Nod: Barney even remembers to include the Ducky Tie in his costume.
  • Courteous Canadian: Barney learn that he is of Canadian descent from his long-lost father, which horrifies him to no end. The Stinger of the episode is an Imagine Spot where his Canadian side manifests as a Literal Split Personality dressed as a Mountie, and his American side (dressed as All-American Face Apollo Creed from Rocky) beats him up. The Canadian side spends the beatdown complimenting and apologizing to his attacker.
  • Mirror Match: The episode ends with Barney hallucinating a Canadian version of himself whom he viciously attacks.
  • Moose and Maple Syrup: Of course Robin unleashes a hurricane of Canada jokes to poke fun at Barney being part Canadian.
  • No Sparks: Naomi is a lovely girl, and on paper, she and Ted should make a great couple. But they have zero chemistry and find even cuddling to be unbearably awkward.

Barney's Canadian Side

Barney despairs at being 1/4 Canadian. This manifests as a Canadian "split personality" -- an overly nice Mountie who compliments his American attacker.

How well does it match the trope?
