After an alcohol-induced blackout, Ted awakens to find a strange woman— and a pineapple— in his bed.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Invoked. The gang pushes Ted to get stupid drunk so he can get a girl without overthinking things.
  • Bedsheet Ladder: This is how Trudy gets out of the apartment.
  • The Cameo: Guest star is Danica McKellar as Trudy.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Ted gets mad that Barney set his coat on fire as he was still wearing it, but Barney is more worried that the coat's material wasn't real suede.
  • Confusing Multiple Negatives: Ted after getting plastered in - "And now, I don't think I won't not go to the bathroom!"
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Barney's method of getting Ted to stop drunk dialing Robin? Threatening to set him on fire. And actually doing so.
  • Gargle Blaster: The "Red Dragon" shots Carl brings the gang sets off the whole plot. It may not have been particularly bad, but Ted did drink five of them at once.
  • Karaoke Bonding Scene: Ted gets drunk on a dare and then starts acting crazy on purpose to let go of his unrequited love for Robin. He sings a loud, embarrassing karaoke song at his favourite bar. He catches a look of another pretty girl Trudy who thinks he's cute and that his drunken performance is quite charming.
  • Man on Fire: Downplayed. Barney threatened to set Ted's coat on fire while he was still wearing it. Ted was not amused at all.
Ted: You SET ME ON FIRE!
  • Mind Screw: Ultimately the pineapple's origins, but the entire premise of the episode can be considered as such.
  • Noodle Incident: The pineapple.
  • Pass the Popcorn: Marshall runs to make popcorn when Ted dials the mystery phone number on his arm.
  • Only Sane Man: Carl had the common sense to write his phone number in Ted's arm in case someone found him the following day.
  • Running Gag: "I'm back, babydoll!"
  • This Is for Emphasis, Bitch!:
Carl: Did you guys enjoy your shots?
Ted (very drunk): I drank all five, bitch!
  • The Unreveal: Up until it was revealed in a deleted scene from the final season, the gang never knew where the pineapple came from, but it was delicious.
  • What Did I Do Last Night?: The premise of the episode.
  • WMG: Invoked by Marshall, where he theorizes Carl is a vampire because he wears nothing but black clothes, they never see him during the day or outside the bar and he did strange red shots that looked like blood. Agent Scully Robin points out that this also describes a bartender.
