Recap / Hell Girl S 1 E 26 Basting

Go To

As Ai is ferried to Hell, the spider tells her that she has broken the rules he set out for her by attempting to take her own revenge and that her soul must now be delivered to Hell as punishment. Ai refuses, saying that she is not done yet. The spider tries to trap Ai with a web, but she escapes to the world of the living. Ai appears to her minions as a bright light and Hone Onna is relieved that she is alright, but Wanyuudo says that she is still trying to get revenge before being pulled away by Ai. Ichimoku Ren and Hone Onna follow him. The spider appears on a tree branch and says that Ai should let the past go. At the temple, Tsugumi asks Hajime why Sentaro let Ai die, but Hajime as disappeared. Ai brings Tsugumi to the railroad crossing where they first met and asks if she wants to know the truth about Hajime. Ai then takes her to the scene of Ayumi's death. Tsugumi sees Hajime drive Ayumi away and the car crash where Ayumi died and Hajime refuses to believe he had anything to do with it. The scene fades and Ai tells Tsugumi that Hajime needs to be punished for sending Ayumi to her death and offers her Wanyuudo's straw doll. Tsugumi refuses, but finds herself back in town with the doll.

In the sunset world, Hajime hears Ai's story from Hone Onna and Ren and is surprised to find out that she was in the revenge business for around four hundred years as punishment for burning her village down. Ren tells Hajime that Ai had been washing her sins away by setting her own grievance aside and performing her duties, but seeing Hajime undid all of that. Hajime wonders why they've brought him to Ai's hut and Hone Onna says they don't know what to do anymore. Ai's grandmother asks for Hajime's help in exchange for him being returned to the world of the living, which surprises Ren and Hone Onna as she's never spoken to anyone but Ai before.

Back at the Shibatas' home, Tsugumi says that she misses her mother. Ai appears and tells Tsugumi that she hates Hajime enough to use the straw doll. Tsugumi tries to deny what she saw, but Ai just tells her to think about her offer. Tsugumi then sees the clock winding itself backward and Ayumi's corpse slumped over table with Ai reflected in the window. Ai recites the terms of her deal as "Ayumi" reanimates, offers Tsugumi some of her favorite cereal and then dies before Tsugumi's eyes as she looks on, horrified. Ai Tsugumi the doll and continues to pressure her to pull the thread. Hajime bursts into the room demands to know what Ai was trying to get Tsugumi to do. Ren and Hone Onna appear and ask her to stop as revenge will solve nothing, but Ai blasts them into the wall. Hajime tries to escape with Tsugumi, but Tsugumi pushes him away and asks why Ayumi died. Ai tells Tsugumi that Ayumi would still be alive if Hajime hadn't driver her away. Hajime tells Ai that it has nothing to do with her, but Ai asks him if that is really the case and the scene changes back to the car crash. Ai tells Tsugumi to pull the thread, but Tsugumi is surprised when Hajime says that he should have been the one who died in the crash. Hajime breaks down crying and apologizes to Tsugumi, who can't bring herself to untie the thread. Hajime begs Ayumi to forgive him for being so distant, for letting his anger consume him, leading Ai to recall her own death because of Sentaro's cowardice. Ai once again tells Tsugumi to pull the thread and Hajime says that he deserves it, but Tsugumi walks up to him and swats him with the doll, wondering why he would say that. Tsugumi says that she never hated Hajime, that she was happy living with him. Hajime says that every day he spent with her was a blessing. This shocks Ai out of her anger, making her recall her friendship with Sentaro. Tsugumi hands the straw doll back to Ai and tells her that Sentaro built the temple as an apology to her. Ai brings them back to the temple and the straw doll reverts back to Wanyuudo. Ai uses her powers to burn the temple and walks away, telling her minions that they are done there. Wanyuudo takes them back to the sunset world in his carriage form and the spider disappears. Tsugumi asks Hajime why Ai burned the temple down. Hajime almost answers, but instead thanks Tsugumi for everything and the two head home with Hajime promising to never leave Tsugumi again. After the credits, Ai offers a straw doll to a girl with a dead cat and says the decision rests with her...
