Recap / Harley Quinn 2019 S 2 E 9 Bachelorette

Go To

It's Bachelor/Bachelorette weekend for Ivy and Kite Man.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Wimp:
    • In the comics, Eris is a goddess with all the power that implies. Here she's only shown using mind control and even with that it's pretty straightforward for the Cobb Squad to take her out.
    • The Amazons were also embarrassingly ineffective in battle. All of them being mind-controlled clearly meant none were at the top of their game.
  • Aloof Ally: Everyone Harley gathers for Ivy's bachelorette party, especially Catwoman. Nora Fries is still grieving her husband and Jennifer is Ivy's kindergarten friend who's a little bitter she isn't the Maid of Honor. Ivy lampshades this but appreciates the effort.
  • Arranged Marriage: King Shark has to marry Tabitha of the hammerheads to prevent war between the kingdoms.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Harley and Ivy want to take out Eris for selling out nature and women in Themyscira by building a resort and selling it to Lex Luthor. Jennifer wants to take out Eris because the resort didn't have bottomless mimosas.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Birds already run into planes. The problem naturally gets worse when those planes are also invisible.
  • Badass Normal: Jennifer lacks the superpowers or advanced athletics training of Harley, Ivy, and Catwoman, but is still a valuable player in the battle against the Amazons, personally taking a few out with a sword and being the one to hurl Eris to her death. Subverted with Nora, who tries to help by...closing the laptop window featuring Lex Luthor's video feed. And she can't even figure that out.
  • Bedmate Reveal: Ivy and Harley wake up to find out that they slept together. Twice. Naturally, Ivy is horrified when she realizes this, especially the second time after she had vowed not to make that mistake again.
  • Boring, but Practical: During the battle against the Amazons, Catwoman makes a major contribution by swinging her whip at the paperwork that Eris was making Hippolyta sign. It's not particularly deadly or flashy, but it does prevent the legal transfer of the island and cause a distraction that allows Harley to take Eris down.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Ivy calls the trip to Themyscira her dream vacation because it has relaxation, partying, and murder.
  • Breast Attack: During the Cobb Squad's attack, Eris whines that they "hit me in the tit" with a thrown vase.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Maxie Zeus reappears serving as the Themyscira resort's greeter and entertainment MC.
    • Luthor turns up alive and well and still making villain plots; in this case to get Queen Hippolyta to sign over Themyscira.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: King Shark defiantly puts his foot down in front of his father, saying he rejects his arranged marriage and prefers life on land. He then rescinded it and married Tabitha anyway, but according to him the feeling of calling him out was good enough.
  • The Cameo: Ares, the God of War, currently employed as the resort's male stripper.
  • Character Exaggeration: As a gag all Amazonian transport is made invisible.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Did you, Jennifer, just throw the goddess Eris over a balcony for not offering bottomless mimosas?
  • Disney Creatures of the Farce: Myriad sea animals show up for the parody of "Under the Sea", all of which crap in the ocean.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: No bottomless mimosas for Jennifer? She's down with murder for that slight, to the tune of jumping on an Amazon and biting off a piece of her neck and attempted deicide by throwing Eris, a goddess, over a balcony. In the party that happens as a reward for the rescue she helped by killing two Amazons, she's seen drinking from a skull.
  • Embarrassing Tattoo: Ivy got a "Cobb Squad" tattoo while drunk and is embarrassed that no one else did.
  • Extreme Doormat: King Shark makes a big show of declining his arranged marriage but shows afterwards he went through with it, saying he changed his mind minutes after because he can't refuse his father.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Subverted. Harley at first appears oblivious to Eris and the obvious corporate shift Themyscira has undergone, but the next day it's revealed Harley was well aware of the plot and just wanted to enjoy the amenities before telling Ivy about it so they could destroy it together as a gift.
  • Faux Horrific: How does King Shark finish telling off everyone at the dinner? He says he likes crapping in a toilet.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Jennifer rejects being called "Jen" until after she takes part in saving Themyscira with the other girls.
  • Gilligan Cut: Twice Harley and Ivy go from drinking and talking about being friends to waking up in bed together.
  • Given Name Reveal: King Shark's birth name of Nanaue is revealed in this episode.
  • Grievous Bottley Harm: Nora Fries breaks two wine glasses to use as weapons.
  • Hoist Hero over Head: Well, hoist villain over head. After Harley knocks Eris out, Jennifer lifts Eris over her head and hurls her off a balcony, for not having bottomless mimosas.
  • The Immodest Orgasm: After Harley and Ivy have sex the first time, Catwoman makes note of the "paper-thin walls".
  • Informed Attribute: Apparently, Ivy will not consider a relationship with Harley because Harley would get bored of her quickly and end it. This is despite the events of "Till Death Do Us Part", where Harley waited inside Arkham Asylum for a whole year for Joker, and still wouldn't give up on him until Ivy herself engineered a situation that proved Joker would choose Batman over her every time.
  • Insistent Terminology: For most of the episode Jennifer insists on using her full name and not "Jen".
  • Karma Houdini: The Cobb Squad doesn't face any consequences for killing a few of the brainwashed Amazons. Then again, they did save the day there...
  • Kissing Under the Influence: Harley and Ivy have sex when drunk. Twice.
  • Lady Land: Themyscira, the ultimate embodiment of this in the DC Universe, now also an all-women-only resort (Maxie Zeus and Ares are the sole male employees on a nearby island that serves as a strip club).
  • Lampshade Hanging: King Shark's hammerhead bride is so nervous about their arranged marriage she's managing to chainsmoke underwater.
  • Man Bites Man: Jennifer uses her teeth to tear out an Amazon's throat.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: Hippolyta's normally-blue eyes glow yellow when she's under Eris's spell.
  • Modesty Bedsheet: Harley and Ivy are both covered by a bedsheet when they wake up together.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Eris' design is taken from the Wonder Woman comics during the New 52 period.
    • Harley developed a surprising friendship with Hippolyta (and met both Ares and Darkseid in the process) in the Injustice: Gods Among Us comics.
    • This is not the first time that Luthor worked with a Greek goddess/demigoddess against the Amazons.
    • It has recently started becoming a regular gag for a Breast Attack to happen to Harley and/or others around her.
    • Two of the Amazons are named Hope and Mercy, in reference to Luthor's bodyguards from the comics, Mercy Graves and Hope Taya, who were revealed as Amazons (although the comics and other adaptations have gone back and forth on whether Mercy is human or an Amazon).
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Nevermind the fact that Themyscira, the mythical paradise island that was kept secret by divine decree for centuries, is suddenly embracing social media and allowing people to come as a destination resort, the fact that Maxie Zeus (a mortal man who thinks he's their god) and Lex Luthor are allowed there despite men being forbidden for so long should clue everyone in that there is something seriously wrong going on.
  • Putting the Pee in Pool: The creatures and people of the ocean make a big deal over pooping wherever they want, and how going in toilets is shameful, to the point that they bury the lede that King Shark should come back and get married to prevent a war. Genocide simply doesn't work as well in song.
  • Running Gag:
    • Birds splattering bloodily into invisible Amazonian transportation.
    • Undersea folk talking about pooping freely.
  • Second Love: Nora Fries, who was mourning her husband's death, hooks up with Maxie Zeus.
  • Shout-Out: The Toilet Humor song "Beneath the Sea" is a parody of "Under the Sea", being sung here by a talking lobster who also has an accent and supported by underwater creatures.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Hippolyta has all the gravitas to be expected from the Queen of Amazons but she isn't above calling a "fucking rager" in celebration of their freedom.
  • Their First Time: Harley and Ivy have sex for the first time this episode. Although, both were drunk and Ivy is still engaged to Kite Man, so the morning after isn't a happy one for either of them.
  • Toilet Humor: An entire "Under the Sea"-style diddy... about crapping in the ocean.
  • Toplessness from the Back: The morning after Harley and Ivy sleep together, Harley turns around so you can only see her back to put her top back on.
  • Villain Has a Point: Harley is still correct when she tries to brush off to Nora that her husband willingly chose to sacrifice himself to save her.
  • Villainous Gentrification: The real reason Harley chose Themyscira isn't for its spa facilities... it's so Ivy can take down Luthor and Eris's plan to gentrify it and protect its natural resources. Considering Poison Ivy is an Eco-Terrorist, she's touched by the attention to detail Harley put into it.
  • Worf Had the Flu: The Amazons are usually depicted as the greatest warriors in the DCU, but since they're all under Eris's mind control, they lose access to their powers and become quite easy to defeat.
