Recap / Harley Quinn 2019 S 2 E 10 Dye Hard

Go To

Harley's night on the town is interrupted by the Riddler and Dr. Psycho.

Tropes:

  • Action Bomb: Sy Borgman sticks a key in his belly button that turns him into a living bomb.
  • Amplifier Artifact: Dr. Psycho has Riddler steal a helmet from Wayne Tower that amplifies brainwaves, thus enhancing his psychic powers.
  • And All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt: Harley's T-shirt in the prologue says "I went to Themyscira and all I got was this lousy T-shirt."
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Clayface says he has a date with Tony... by which he means the Tony Awards show.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Sy Borgman, who had been absent for a good portion of Season 2, makes his return in this episode.
    • Gus, the affable goon of Scarecrow's who Ivy had to put up with back in Season 1, turns out not to have been massacred along with all the other goons and now turns up pretending to commit a Hostage Situation at Wayne Tower.
  • Complexity Addiction: Dr. Psycho mind-controls Clayface and King Shark to attack Harley, but refuses to control Harley directly because he wants to make her suffer.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Joker happens to have taken up bartending at Wayne Tower just as Harley decides to go there. He says it's because everywhere else was destroyed by Parademons except for Wayne Tower because of its bulletproof windows.
  • Cure for Cancer: Inverted. Wayne Tower has a "Cancer Ray" Ray Gun (as its actual primary purpose is to cause cancer, rather than a side effect).
  • Darkest Hour: Psycho has betrayed Harley and her crew and teamed up with the Riddler to steal a helmet that amplifies his power enough to control the Parademons. He uses his mind powers to control Clayface and King Shark, and Sy sacrifices himself to allow Harley, Jim, and Joker to escape. The only option left is to free the Justice League from the Queen of Fable's book and to do that Harley has to bring back the Joker's memories so they can find the book.
  • Enemy Mine: Gordon reluctantly teams up with Harley once he realizes the two of them are seriously outmatched by Dr. Psycho and the Riddler.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Harley does everything in her power to keep the amnesiac Joker from returning to his old self. By the end, she admits she’s very reluctant to throw him in a vat of acid just to get him to remember where the book containing the Justice League is. Despite everything he’s done to her, she shows that she still cares about him in some way. It could also be because she sees that he is better off as a normal bartender with a happy family.
    • Also, she immediately regrets using, what would be revealed as, a cancer ray gun on one of the robbers despite her trying to instantly kill him with him.
  • Exposition Already Covered: Dr. Psycho explains to Harley and her crew that he took the helmet from Wayne Tower to amplify his powers to mind control the Parademons. Harley figures out that Psycho is doing her old plan of taking over Gotham and teaming up with Darkseid to rule the Earth. When Psycho is about to repeat what Harley just said, Gordon points out Harley already said what he's going to do, angering Psycho.
  • Eye Scream:
    • Sane Joker is able to kill one of the goons by grabbing a pencil and stabbing the goon's right eye with it.
    • Sy tears out his cybernetic right eye as a parting gift for Harley.
  • Genius Bruiser: After being forced to power their base nonstop for months, Riddler is now a physical threat shrugging off Harley's blows, though she taunts that his riddles have gotten dumber.
  • Godzilla Threshold: With Psycho controlling the Parademons, teaming up with the Riddler, and mind controlling Clayface and King Shark, Harley needs to free the Justice League to stop them. However, they're trapped in Queen of Fables's book and the only person who knows its location is the Joker, who only has fragments of memories of his past life and doesn't know where to look. With no other options, Harley has no choice but to bring the Joker back by throwing him into the same acid that created him.
  • Helicopter Blender: Sy chops up a few Parademons with his wheelchair's helicopter blades.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Sy Borgman sacrifices himself to allow Harley, Jim, and Joker to escape by turning himself into a bomb and crashing into Psycho's barrier to allow them to fly out.
  • Hostage Situation: One breaks out in the lounge at the top of Wayne Tower. A gag is made of the high class clientele when two volunteer to meet the hostage taker's demands of a fifty million dollar ransom and military weaponry and nukes, respectively.
  • Immune to Mind Control: Psycho attempts to take control of Sy just like he did Clayface and King Shark, but can't due to metal plates in Sy's head.
  • Inventional Wisdom: Wayne Tower has a "Cancer Ray," a Ray Gun that causes cancer. Not as a side effect; that is its literal purpose.
  • I Regret Nothing: Subverted. Sy Borgman, as a former CIA agent, regrets lots of things.
  • Lured into a Trap: Dr. Psycho lures the team to Wayne Tower by making them think Harley is texting them for help, so he can turn them against her with his amplified powers.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Clayface interprets Psycho and Riddler's partnership as the two of them dating, and continues to interpret their partnership as such despite Psycho's statements otherwise.
Psycho: We're not fucking, we're together!
Clayface: I see. Not using labels yet, are we? Too new, is it? Dating, hooking up, baring ass, call it what you will. I'm proud of you for finally being who you are.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Psycho states that this is the reason why he betrayed Harley and partnered up with Riddler, but Harley doesn't buy all of it...
Psycho: (...) And you know what? He doesn't belittle me like you did, Quinn.
Harley: How did I belittle you?
Psycho: You never recognized my talent! YOU never let me shine!
Harley: And also you hated working for a woman!
Psycho: Okay, also I hated working for a woman, but WHO CARES?!!
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Joker kills a man by jabbing a pencil in his eye, just like in The Dark Knight.
    • Harley asking Sane Joker how much he weighs is an allusion to Batman asking Vicki Vale the same question in Batman (1989).
  • No Ontological Inertia: Subverted. Harley breaking Granny's scepter two episodes ago didn't get rid of the Parademons, it just left them aimless. They've been harassing Gotham ever since.
  • Psychic Block Defense: A metal plate in Sy's skull protects him from Dr. Psycho's telepathy.
  • Ray Gun: Harley briefly uses one in Wayne Tower, which turns out to be a "Cancer Ray".
  • Took a Level in Badass: After being forced to spend as much time as possible running on the hamster wheel powering the base for months on end, while being otherwise treated real well (fed healthy, and given proper rest), caused Riddler to get into seriously good shape.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Harley's reaction to seeing that the amnesiac Joker is her bartender, with an added f-bomb, especially when she's lonely and distraught over being rejected by Ivy. She keeps saying this as circumstances leave her stuck with him, like being knocked out and handcuffed to him during a hostage situation.
