Recap / Harley Quinn 2019 S 1 E 12 Devils Snare

Go To

Harley and the crew must stop Scarecrow's army of living, murderous trees before they destroy Gotham City.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: The Joker unceremoniously kills Poison Ivy by firing a harpoon through her chest. Alan Tudyk previously played a character who was infamously killed in the same fashion.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Ivy apologizes to the mutant trees as she is killing them, especially since she can tell by the rings that some are the equivalent of children.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Ivy admits to secretly watching NASCAR, taking long showers, hating paper straws, and being excited for Jazz Festnote .
  • As You Know: When Dr. Psycho asks Ivy to have the beanstalk return them to the ground, Ivy reminds him that she can't control plants from Fable's book. It becomes a subversion when Psycho asks how he'd know that when it's never come up before. And, incidentally, mentions that it would be an unlikely thing to ever come up in the first place.
  • Behemoth Battle: To stop the rampaging tree-monsters, Ivy turns herself into a Giant Woman and wrestles with them.
  • Bourgeois Bohemian: Under the influence of the Lasso of Truth, Ivy admits to secretly enjoying NASCAR, taking long showers, and hates using paper straws.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Kite Man rescues everyone from the giant atop the beanstalk with some sriracha sauce shot into the giant's eye, then catches them on his kite when they fall off the cloud.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Queen of Fables sends Harley's crew into the sky to deal with a giant at the top of the beanstalk rather than make sure they're dead. When Joker calls her out on this, she claims it would have been a much more cinematic death. She doesn't learn her lesson, siccing the Big Bad Wolf on them and not bothering to watch to make sure it does the job, allowing Harley to get the drop on her after King Shark kills the wolf off-screen by hiding in its hollowed-out corpse.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: When Kite Man has his Big Damn Heroes moment:
    Harley's crew: Kite Man!
    Ivy: Hell yeah.
  • Brick Joke: While trying to avoid telling Harley about her dating Kite Man, Ivy asks how big she thinks the giant's dick is, a subject Harley does admit she wants to talk about. Later, the Queen of Fables mentions him explicitly as a "big-dicked giant," proving the question had merit.
  • Call a Pegasus a "Hippogriff": The giant used by The Queen Of Fables has one eye but it's always called a giant rather than a cyclops.
  • Call-Back: The tower that Joker wanted funded in "A Seat at the Table" finally becomes a reality.
  • Chain of People: Ivy grabs the Lasso while also holding onto Harley, followed by Psycho, Shark, Clayface, and Sy making the chain keeping them from getting pulled into the Phantom Zone.
  • Deadline News: The headline writer for GNN, now JNN, was shot offscreen.
BREAKING NEWS: THERE IS A GUN POINTED AT MY HEAD. PLEASE HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
  • Disproportionate Retribution: The Justice League nearly sentences Harley's entire crew to the Phantom Zone for the tree monster attack in Gotham Park, a fate usually reserved for Superman's stronger enemies for far greater crimes.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight:
    • Parodied with Clayface, who decides to do Romeo's death scene after being skewered by thorns.
    • Played straight with Ivy, who gets a harpoon through the chest and dies a few moments later. For added brilliance, the plants that sprout under her body are white irises (which symbolize purity, love and friendship and are often used in wedding bouquets) and "Harlequin Blue Flag" irises, endemic to the wet lands of the eastern coast of the United States and Canada.
  • Everybody Knew Already: When Ivy reveals she's dating Kite Man, Harley is honestly shocked by this while the rest of the crew already knew. Ivy is annoyed that Harley is so self-absorbed that she didn't catch on to the obvious clues, which Ivy didn't even put that much effort into hiding.
  • Evil Is Petty: Joker betrays the entire Legion of Doom seemingly for no other reason than accepting Harley and listening to her criticisms of his giant tower plan, which he pointedly builds right under Legion headquarters just to rub it in.
  • Fertile Blood: Flowers sprout from Ivy's blood.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Back in "A Seat at the Table", when Joker is pitching his tower idea to the Legion, Scarecrow is the first person to praise and support his idea. This would later reveal that Scarecrow teamed up with Joker.
    • Clayface acting out Romeo's death scene as he dies in Harley's arms from being skewered in the back by thorns. He then reveals that his clay body makes him immune to the thorns, so he's fine. Poison Ivy is not fine after taking a harpoon from Joker in the back.
  • Giant Woman: Ivy turns very tall after consuming the toxin Scarecrow created from her pheromones. The fanservice aspect is lightly emphasized (her clothes tear) and lampshaded (Doctor Psycho is into it).
  • A Handful for an Eye: Kite Man takes out the giant atop the beanstalk by squirting sriracha sauce in his one eye.
  • In the Back: When Ivy, in her gigantic form, finally forgives Harley and gives her another chance, Joker fires a giant harpoon through her back in the chest area. She shrinks down to her normal size and dies in Harley's arms.
  • Lack of Empathy: Gordon wants to blow up Gotham Park to solve the problem of the mutant trees despite the civilians in harm's way, because as he sees it those hippies should have bothered to read the e-mail stating that Jazz Fest was canceled.
  • Made of Plasticine: Queen of Fables is decapitated when Harley hits her in the head with her bat. Harley is surprised by how easily it popped off.
  • Magic Pants: Ivy growing giant shreds her jacket, but her undershirt and pants manage to stay intact in the necessary areas. They also continue to fit when she shrinks back to normal size.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Harley calls the Justice League the "Jerkoff League".
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: Twice, as Gordon rallies his group of cops, he adds, "...and Cheryl."
  • Mythology Gag:
  • No-Sell: The mutated trees and the Queen of Fables' beanstalk are immune to Ivy's control.
  • No Accounting for Taste: Dr. Psycho mentions offhand that apparently Kite Man is who Ivy likes, of all people. The best excuse Ivy can come up with is "Fuck you, Psycho, I dunno."
  • Not Me This Time: The Justice League accuses Harley and her crew of causing the mutated trees because Ivy is among them, and they plan on banishing them to the Phantom Zone. Ivy uses Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth on herself to prove their innocence.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: King Shark kills the Queen of Fables' Big Bad Wolf, hollowing it out so Harley could use its corpse as a disguise to get the jump on the Queen.
King Shark: A lot of people ask me who would win between a wolf and a shark. [Coughs up a bone] It's a shark.
  • Off with His Head!: Harley knocks the Queen of Fables head off with her bat and was not expecting her head to so easily pop off.
  • Red Herring: While it was assumed that the Legion of Doom was behind the mutated trees because Scarecrow is a member who was creating the chemicals and their logo was on a recycling bin at Scarecrow's factory, it turns out Joker was behind it all when he blew up their headquarters.
  • Skewed Priorities:
    • Harley insists on stopping the trees from destroying Gotham because she doesn't want to have to move to Metropolis. Then again, considering that, in Metropolis, she'd be up against Superman...
    • Clayface decides to act out Romeo's death scene from Romeo and Juliet after getting skewered by a bunch of thorns, evidently just because it seemed like a good opportunity. The crew is still being chased by murderous trees, mind you.
  • Stepford Smiler: The news anchor reports the news of Joker's takeover in a fearful demeanor, then switches to a cheery attitude when a Joker goon steps in view and gives her a new script, a purple blazer, and the caption flashes the Deadline News.
  • Take That!: Ivy cracks that the new "Joker News Network" (JNN) is only "...the second most-evil news network." Choose which one Ivy (and the showrunners) consider the first most-evil in America.
  • Tank Goodness: Gotham has taxpayer-funded tanks for the police, which Gordon is eager to put to use. They don't get to do much before being taken out by the trees.
  • Teleport Gun: Superman has the Phantom Zone projector. It's the portal gun variant this time, where he can press a button on the gun to make the portal suck people in.
  • Villain Respect: The Queen of Fables can only say "Props!" when she realizes that Harley skinned and is wearing the Big Bad Wolf to get close to her.
  • Villain Team-Up: Joker, Scarecrow, and Queen of Fables have been working together from the sidelines this whole time.
  • Wham Episode: Joker was behind the mutated trees and teamed up with Scarecrow and Queen of Fables to make it possible. The Legion of Doom's headquarters is blown up by the Joker and his tower is put in its place. Harley kills the Queen of Fables but Joker kills Poison Ivy.
  • Wham Shot:
    • When Superman asks who's responsible for the mutated trees if it's not Ivy, a fairy tales book drops in front of the Justice League. Wonder Woman immediately has an Oh, Crap! reaction.
    • When Harley is about to blow up the Legion of Doom's Headquarters, their headquarters is blown up before she can do it herself. When Clayface asks who could have done it, Joker's tower pops out of the ground.
    • Harley and Ivy have made up, share a joke and a good laugh, and then one of Joker's harpoons comes right out of Ivy's chest, followed by his cackling laugh.
  • The Worf Effect: Queen of Fables is able to trap Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the Flash in her fairy tales book when they were caught off guard. Superman tries to resist, but Fables is able to push him inside. It's implied the rest of the Legion of Doom were subject to this too, seeing as how they're all absent in this episode.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Two dogs with one yank. Harley and Poison Ivy reconcile, while Kite Man proposes to Poison Ivy and by the end of the episode, Poison Ivy is dead.
  • Yiddish as a Second Language: Invoked. Clayface turns into a wolf that is inexplicably Jewish. (He took a swing.)
Clayface: Stop with this meshugenah nonsense!
