Saving The Turtles

To prepare for Sheet Rock Hills’ annual Ride-Your-Bike Day, Mayor Rosa calls Manny to install a bike path around Lake Nochanailin. Unfortunately, a turtle has chosen to make its nest exactly where the path is supposed to be built…

”Saving The Turtles” provides examples of:

  • Artistic License – Biology: In real life, turtle eggs take about 60 days to incubate; in the episode, the eggs the turtle lays end up hatching at most a week later, on Ride-Your-Bike Day.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Manny realizes that they can both install the bike path and protect the turtle eggs if they build a bridge over the turtle’s nest.
  • Foreshadowing: When Manny and the tools are making shadow puppets with Manny’s work lamp, Manny makes a puppet of a turtle. Guess what animal ends up causing problems for them when they try to build a bike path around Lake Nochanailin.
  • Free Wheel: Mr. Lopart produces one while trying to work on his bike.
  • Furry Confusion: While trying to work on his bike, Mr. Lopart employs a whole set of inanimate wrenches.
  • Green Aesop: On the importance of protecting wildlife.
  • I Meant to Do That: Felipe claims this after his attempt to test the brakes on Kelly’s bike (at her request) leads to him being flung into a cardboard box.
  • Impossible Shadow Puppets: A variation occurs at the beginning of the episode- when testing Manny’s newly-fixed work light, the tools make shadow puppets that are impossible for a human, but easy for them- for instance, Dusty bends over in such a way that her shadow resembles the iconic open shark-mouth of Jaws, with her saw-teeth forming the shark’s teeth.
  • Lightbulb Joke: After Manny fixes his work lamp:
Felipe: Guess how many handymen it takes to screw in a light bulb.
Pat: I don’t know. How many handymen does it take?
Felipe: Just one, but he has to be really BRIGHT!
  • Offscreen Crash: One happens (and produces a Free Wheel) after Manny walks away from Mr. Lopart while the latter works on his bike.
  • Shout-Out: At the beginning of the episode, Dusty makes a shadow puppet of a shark which bears an uncanny resemblance to the infamous Jaws movie poster.

Abuelito’s Siesta

Abuelito calls Manny- his cuckoo clock has started cuckooing constantly, preventing him from taking his afternoon nap. Fixing the cuckoo clock isn’t too hard, all things considered… but, for some reason, even after it’s fixed Abuelito can’t seem to sleep.

”Abuelito’s Siesta” includes these tropes:

  • All Cloth Unravels: The sweater that Mr. Lopart puts on Fluffy ends up being caught on Manny’s cactus and starts unraveling into a long string; at the end of the episode, Mr. Lopart’s sweater also gets caught on Mrs. Portillo’s rosebushes, although Manny unsnags the string before the sweater can unravel too much.
  • Brick Joke: At the beginning of the episode, Mr. Lopart is seen struggling to get a sweater onto Fluffy; once he finally gets the sweater on, they set out for a walk, and Fluffy’s sweater promptly snags itself on a cactus and starts to unravel. At the end of the episode, their walk takes them past Abuelito’s house, at the exact right time for Fluffy’s sweater to just finish coming undone.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Foreign Language Title: The title essentially means “Grandpa’s Nap” in Spanish, although as Abuelito is the character’s name (sort of) it probably shouldn’t be translated that way.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Felipe sounds like this when singing “De Colores”.
  • Homemade Sweater from Hell: Apparently, Mrs. Lopart knitted sweaters (yellow-orange-and-purple, with icons of Fluffy’s face on them) for her son and his cat. Mr. Lopart actually enjoys his; Fluffy does not.
  • It's Always Spring: Surprisingly averted, as autumn leaves are seen in the episode’s opening and Mr. Lopart mentions that the weather is starting to get chilly.
  • Offscreen Crash: This happens after Fluffy jumps onto the awning of Mr. Lopart’s shop and then slides off; the camera then reveals that she landed on Mr. Lopart.
  • Pet Dress-Up: Near the beginning of the episode, Mr. Lopart is seen trying to put Fluffy into a miniature sweater his mother knitted. Fluffy is not exactly cooperative with this.
  • Scenery Censor: The “preventing spoiling of a comedic reveal” version occurs when the tools are playing “Stick The Handle On The Toolbox” in the beginning of the episode, as Fixit’s head blocks the audience from seeing that Felipe accidentally stuck the handle to Turner (although it does not block the audience from seeing that the handle isn’t anywhere on the toolbox).
  • Warm Milk Helps You Sleep: When Abuelito is unable to take his siesta, Dusty offers to get him a glass of warm milk.
  • We Sell Everything: Apparently, Kelly’s hardware store has cuckoo clock birds… in multiple different colors.
