Danny Starr

Danny Starr- a singer of whom Dusty is a massive fan- is holding a concert in the park, and Mayor Rosa wants Manny to set up a stage. That work is finished rather quickly- unfortunately, while the tools are backstage with Danny before the show, Pat manages to accidentally destroy his electric guitar. Will the concert need to be cancelled?

Tropes in “Danny Starr” include:

  • Call-Back: The vihuela Abuelito gave Manny in “Musica” ends up being played by Manny to accompany Danny Starr’s concert after the latter’s guitar is accidentally destroyed.
  • Character Title: Named after the musician Danny Starr.
  • Chekhov's Gun: At the beginning of the episode, Manny uses his vihuela to play “Old MacDonald Had A Farm” while the tools sing along; then one of its strings breaks, and he brings it to Kelly’s hardware store to get a new one. Later, at the end of the episode, he ends up playing it onstage with Danny Starr after the electric guitar Danny was going to play during the concert is accidentally broken.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Manny’s ability to play the vihuela. About halfway through the episode, when he tests it out after replacing a string, Danny Starr compliments him on his playing; later, Manny ends up playing it onstage with Danny for complicated reasons.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Pat does this when a string on Manny’s vihuela snaps while he’s trying to play “Old MacDoland Had A Farm”
Pat: What kind of animal goes “boiyyoing”?
  • Concert Episode: Danny Starr (of whom Dusty is a massive fan) is having a concert in the park, and Manny is called to set up the stage; he ends up having to accompany Danny in the concert due to very convoluted reasons.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: While testing out his new vihuela string/demonstrating his vihuela playing for Danny Starr, Manny plays a few bars of Handy Manny’s opening theme.
  • Double Take: When Manny gives Danny Starr his vihuela, as a replacement for a guitar that Pat broke.
Danny Starr: Thanks, Manny. It’s perfect. I can’t wait to hear you play it.
    Manny: Thanks- huh? Me?
  • Faint in Shock: Dusty briefly faints from excitement when Danny Starr shows up after the tools build the stage for his concert and he turns out to know her name; later, she faints again during the concert when Danny sings a line of his song directly to her.
  • Fangirl: Dusty is revealed to be a massive fan of the singer Danny Starr, and spends most of the episode Squeeing about being able to meet him.
  • Flyaway Shot: The episode ends on an aerial-zoom out of the stage in the park Danny Starr is performing on.
  • Friendship Song: “Home Is Where Friends Are”, which can be heard playing on the radio at the beginning of the episode, and which Danny Starr performs in his concert at the end.
  • Goofy Suit: Mr. Lopart dresses up in a gingerbread man costume in order to promote his store’s new gingerbread cookies; apparently, said costume is rather itchy.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Felipe once again proves to be this when he tries to sing, although oddly he sounded decent enough when the tools were singing “Old MacDonald” at the beginning of the episode.
  • I'm Okay!: Pat says this after he Offscreen Crashes into Danny Starr’s guitar. Unfortunately, the guitar isn’t.
  • Offscreen Crash: This happens when Pat trips and smashes into Danny Starr’s guitar.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Apparently, Danny Starr is Dusty’s favorite singer, despite the fact that she never mentioned him before in the show.
  • The Show Must Go On: When Danny Starr’s electric guitar is destroyed, he doesn’t even consider canceling the concert- instead, he searches for a workaround and ends up having Manny accompany him onstage on the his vihuela.
  • We Sell Everything: For some reason, Kelly’s hardware store has vihuela strings.

Quinceañera

Mr. Ayala is having his niece Lucia’s quinceañera in the community center- but first, he needs the ceiling fan fixed, as it’s getting rather hot. Manny accomplishes this easily; unfortunately, while being tested the fan manages to blow so strongly it makes a mess of the room. Most of the mess is easy to clean up, but the flowers Mr. Ayala has bought for the celebration are ruined, and those aren’t so easily replaced… or are they?

”Quinceañera” provides examples of:

  • Affectionate Nickname: At one point, Dusty calls Squeeze “Squeezy”.
  • Birthday Episode: It’s Lucia Ayala’s 15th birthday, and she’s having her quinceañera in the community center.
  • Continuity Nod: In an extremely subtle one, Kelly is seen setting up a display of paint cans in her hardware store, and is specifically holding a certain shade of green paint when Manny walks in- the same green paint the tools made a mess with the first time they worked in the community center.
  • Explosive Instrumentation: Mr. Lopart’s automatic cat food dispenser ends up exploding for no clear reason, burying Fluffy in a pile of kibble.
  • Foreign Language Title: The title is the name of a Mexican celebration that happens on a girl’s 15th birthday; the word for the celebration literally means “15 years old”.
  • Gone Horribly Right: While trying to cool down the community center, the tools turn the just-fixed ceiling fan to higher and higher speeds… which eventually causes it to start blowing any small, light objects around, making a mess and ruining the flowers Mr. Ayala had set up for Lucia’s quinceañera.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Turner, when the tools are playing “Name That Song” at the beginning of the episode.
Turner: That’s easy. I know that song, it’s-um, uh, it’s…
  • I've Heard of That — What Is It?: When Mr. Ayala tells Manny and the tools they can stay and attend Lucia’s quinceañera.
Mr. Ayala: In fact, you tools can be her chambelanes.
Pat: P: “Sounds great! Only… what are chambelanes?
  • Offscreen Crash: Mr. Lopart’s cat food dispenser exploding is presented that way.
  • One-Word Title: Has one.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: While “dressed formally” for Lucia’s quinceañera, Dusty sports a pink bow… and inexplicably manifests a set of eyelashes to go with it.
