A Sticky Fix

When Mr. Noodlander gives Manny a broken trophy to fix, Felipe and Turner fight over who gets to help with the job- and end up accidentally glued to each other!

“A Sticky Fix” contains examples of:

  • An Aesop: It’s important to learn to work together.
  • Bottle Episode: The vast majority of the episode takes place in Manny’s workshop, with only a few brief scenes at Kelly’s store and at the award ceremony.
  • Brand X: The glue Kelly sells comes in bottles that look very similar to but are definitely not Elmer’s glue.
  • Chained Heat: Felipe and Turner manage to accidentally glue themselves together, and have to tolerate each other’s company until Manny is able to separate them.
  • Gone Horribly Right: At the beginning of the episode, Felipe and Turner’s drive to compete with one another results in a broken fan being fixed a bit too well- that is, it starts producing wind strong enough to send the tools, some furniture, and even Manny flying across the room.
  • Heat Wave: Although this is secondary to the main plot, Sheet Rock Hills is being hit by one during the events of the episode (according to Stretch, the outdoor temperature reached at least 106 degrees Fahrenheit), and a few things that happen reflect this- Felipe and Turner compete with each other to try to fix a fan (and end up fixing it a bit too well), and Mr. Lopart is seen washing his window as a way to stay cool while still getting some work done.
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: Rusty does one when Manny begins his attempt to separate a glued Felipe and Turner.
  • Painful Adhesive Removal: Felipe and Turner fear the process of un-sticking them from each other will be this, although it actually turns out to be quite quick and painless.
  • Pun-Based Title: A “sticky fix” is a tough situation, and the episode also involves a literal “sticky fix” (gluing a broken trophy back together) and a situation that’s metaphorically a “fix” but literally “sticky”- Felipe and Turner accidentally gluing themselves to each other.
  • Tear-Apart Tug-of-War: Felipe and Turner doing this to a bottle of glue is what results in them becoming stuck together.

Paint Job

Manny’s attempt to film a movie explaining how to be a handyman is interrupted by a call to help renovate Sheet Rock Hills’ community center; the tools decide to take the camera with them, and film a real repair job, but when Manny leaves them behind while he picks up some odds and ends from the hardware store, the tools decide to keep things interesting for the camera by painting up the place in his absence. Because, really, how hard could it be?

“Paint Job” provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Amateur Film-Making Plot: Manny wants to make a demo video to explain how to be a handyman to his nephew Pedro, but is interrupted in filming by a call to help repair the community center. Felipe (the video’s cameraman) manages to talk Manny into letting him bring the camera and film an actual repair job. Then, when they actually arrive, Felipe goes overboard wanting drama and thrills in what’s supposed to be a simple list of the rules a handyman operates by… and then the tools’ attempt to paint the community center for the camera (while Manny is away at Kelly’s) turns into a disaster on film. Fortunately, Manny is able to salvage the video by using the tools’ painting catastrophe as an example of what can happen if you don’t follow said rules for being a handyman. This convinces Felipe that he’s really a filmmaking genius, and he starts wanting to make a sequel to the video, called “Tool Trouble”.
  • An Aesop: Never start a project without being properly prepared for it.
  • Baths Are Fun: At the end of the episode, the tools are shown having a good time while taking a bath to clean off the paint they’d gotten themselves covered in.
  • Camera Abuse: A tidal wave of green paint splashes Felipe’s In-Universe Camera, although somehow the lens miraculously manages to remain clear enough (and the internal workings dry enough) for the camera to be able to continue filming afterwards.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Dusty does this when Felipe yells “CUT!” after the latest take of Manny’s demo video is messed up.
Dusty (Halfway through a wooden board, with everyone else staring at her): You said cut, right? So I’m cutting!
Felipe: (sighs) "Cut" just means to stop!
  • Covered in Gunge: The tools all end up covered in green paint after their attempt to paint the community center goes horribly wrong.
  • Exact Words: Manny left the tools behind at the community center while he went to fetch some supplies from Kelly’s, and told them not to do any repairs while he was gone. Unfortunately, he failed to tell them not to do any painting while he was gone, and they take this as an invitation to try to paint the entire place without him.
  • Face Palm: Manny does one when he sees the mess the tools have made of the community center.
  • The Ghost: Pedro, a nephew of Manny's. He never appears, but part of the plot of the episode revolves around Manny making a demo video for him explaining how to be a handyman.
  • Here We Go Again!: After seeing how Manny was able to salvage the demo video (by using all of the filmed disasters as a warning of what could happen if you tried to start a project without being prepared), Felipe declares that he must subconsciously be a filmmaking genius… and announces that he wants to make a sequel to the “movie” called “Tool Trouble”.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Felipe describes his plan for the sequel to the demo video to start with a long zoom-out while the show’s actual camera is in the process of doing a long zoom-out.
  • Loophole Abuse: The tools, who want to start working on the community center but were told to wait until Manny gets back from Kelly’s hardware store, exploit the fact that, while Manny told them not to repair anything without him, he didn’t tell them not to paint anything without them.
  • Hyper-Destructive Bouncing Ball: A lid Pat pries off a paint can becomes a Hyper-Destructive Ricocheting Disc which rebounds several times before finally striking the hammer and knocking him into the paint.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: The tools do this to convince Manny to let them continue filming the demo video at the community center.
  • Slippery Skid: Mr. Lopart ends up slipping and falling on sourballs that fell out of his candy dispenser.
  • Tempting Fate: Turner does this when suggesting that the tools paint the community center in Manny’s absence.
Turner: How hard could it be?
