Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E36 "My Invisible Friend"

Go To

Bailey has managed to reach the spelling bee finals, and Gretel has promised to be there for emotional support. However, their friendship is soon tested when Gretel is notified about the Rat Burglar making their strike at a novelty gift warehouse, and the tussle results in Gretel being drenched in Invisible Ink that turns her invisible.

Tropes:

  • Always Someone Better: Bailey has a bit of a rivalry with Xavier, who always seems to win against her in competitions, and now is going against her in the spelling bee. Ultimately subverted when it turns out his mother (who turns out to be the true identity of the Rat Burglar) frequently uses Invisible Ink on herself so she can help her son win those competitions.
  • Call-Back: Not the first time Gretel was forced to reveal her superpowered self to save someone's life.
  • Chekhov's Gun: During the battle between Gretel and the Rat Burglar, a barrel flies at Hamster and Fred just as they enter the auditorium; Hamster bats it up towards the ceiling where it hits some scaffolding holding stage lights and weakens the cables. The cables eventually snap during Bailey and Gretel's argument, forcing the latter to use her superpowers to save Bailey, revealing her secret in the process.
  • Defeating the Cheating Opponent: When it turns out that Xavier had been cheating the whole time, instead of going straight for a Disqualification-Induced Victory, Principal Funderberk states that Bailey still has to spell the final word flawlessly, or there will be no winner. In spite of Gretel's absence, Bailey still manages to do so.
  • Faint in Shock: Bailey does this in the final shot after realizing Gretel is Superhero Gretel.
  • Internal Reveal: When scaffolding is about to fall on Bailey at the end of the episode, Gretel is forced to reveal her superhero self in front of her.
  • Invisibility Ink: Gretel is drenched in Invisible Ink by the Hardy Har-Har Novelty Company, which turns her invisible as the stuff dries. This is a problem, because she needs to be at the spelling bee for Bailey's sake. While she and Kevin try their best to find a substitutional solution, Fred and Hamster go to the company HQ in Brookville to get a more permanent solution.
  • Left the Background Music On: Saxophone music is playing when Fred and Hamster arrive at the Hardy Har-Har Novelty Company headquarters to interrogate the CEO, which turns out to be coming from Hamster's detective playlist.
  • Samus Is a Girl: The Rat Burglar appears to have a masculine build and a voice that kinda sounds masculine, so despite the rat mask, viewers are to assume that the Rat Burglar is male... though it's all to conceal up until the plot twist that it's actually Xavier's mom with a voice changer inside the mask.
  • See the Invisible: Kevin and Gretel try many temporary solutions to make her visible again, and while they do sorta work, none of them look convincing enough to pass off as if nothing had happened. Over at the Hardy Har-Har Novelty Company, Fred and Hamster learn from Mr. Hardy that the Invisible Ink wears off in 20 minutes to 2 hours, and that they can shine a hexavalent flashlight to make Gretel temporarily visible until then (which Mr. Hardy often uses to find his accountant Melvin, who tends to spill Invisible Ink over himself and his desk). The same type of flashlight is also used to expose Xavier's mom in front of the audience.
  • The Unmasking: At the end when Gretel tries to apologize to Bailey but can't tell her what she was doing, Bailey begins to lash out at her for always hiding things from her, which nearly leads to the end of their friendship until Gretel transforms and saves her from getting hit by a studio light. This causes Gretel to realize both her friend and Superhero Gretel are one and the same after spending half the season treating them like separate entities.
  • Wham Episode: Bailey discovers Gretel's superhero identity at the end of the episode.
