Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E18 "Abuelita's World"

Go To

Dave and Carolina are a weekend away at the North American Superintendent and Handyman Trade Convention, and thus they asked Carolina's mom (Kevin and Gretel's Abuelita) to take care of them while they are gone. Kevin and Gretel are not looking forward to this, because while they do love their Abuelita, she is super strict and super scary, as they have to clean up the house with only the tools she approves of, and are very limited to the items and activities they can do and use. Not only that, but it turns out that a giant baby, who used to be the former disgraced mayoral candidate Bob Enfantiberg, is causing a ruckus in town.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: As Abuelita Gomez said, "Sometimes you have to break some rules to do the right thing."
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: The Giant Baby, who is in fact a supersized, de-aged Bob Enfantiberg.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The Giant Baby threw the Action News van into the air during his rampage. It doesn't come down until the end of the episode, where it almost landing on Abuelita forces Hamster and Gretel to use their superpowers to save her.
  • Dark Secret: Despite disliking people keeping secrets from her, Abuelita reveals one of her own to Hamster, Gretel and Kevin, one which she kept hidden even from her own daughter Carolina: she used to be a go-go dancer before Carolina was born. Kevin and Gretel have the appropriate response after learning they're Grandchildren of a Whore.
  • Description Cut: Kevin and Gretel are doing unfun chores all day, but Kevin reasons they have at least more fun than their parents at the convention. Cut to the convention, which shows Dave and Carolina having the time of their lives doing all sorts of fun, handyman-themed games and activities.
  • Gone Horribly Right: After losing another mayoral election and getting dumped by Veronica Hill to a younger, taller candidate with more hair, Bob Enfantiberg decided to brew a concoction that would make himself taller and younger and grow his hair back. The potion made him too tall and too young, but did nothing for his hair.
  • Jerkass: Veronica Hill dumped Bob Enfantiberg for a younger man. It's no wonder he tried to make himself look young.
  • Knight Templar Parent: Abuelita is an extremely strict grandmother who prefers safety over quickness. Kevin and Gretel can't go anywhere under her supervision, and they can’t use smartphones or other electrical appliances either (not even lamps). Kevin can't have any girls come over either, which would be understandable if it didn't include family members like cousin Fred. Though, Abuelita softens up at the end when she learns about Gretel and Hamster's superpowers and promises to keep it a secret.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Abuelita does it whenever Gretel and Kevin tried to do chores the easy way and when they tried to sneak out of the house.
  • Secret-Keeper: Abuelita is the third person (after Kevin and Fred) to know about Hamster and Gretel's secret identities. Abuelita is accepting of Hamster and Gretel's superpowers and is willing to keep it a secret.
  • Shout-Out:
    • At one point, Bob gets smashed into a Totally Tools store.
    • The way Bob carried Abuelita Gomez to the top of the tallest building is a reference to King Kong carrying Ann Darrow to the top of the Empire State Building.
  • The Unmasking: After Kevin, Hamster and Gretel nearly succeed at keeping the latter two's superpowers a secret from Abuelita, they're forced to reveal themselves at the end when a flung Action News van is about to land on them.
  • Who's Laughing Now?: Bob Enfantiberg was last seen ranting on the podium that he'll outdo all the taller and younger candidates he lost to, before being removed from the stage. As a Giant Baby he declares the city is his and rampages.
