Directed by TJ Scott

Written by Danny Cannon & Megan Mostyn Brown

Captain Barnes arrives at the precinct to try and bring law and order to Gotham and the GCPD while Theo Galavan makes a play to become mayor by blackmailing the Penguin into eliminating the competition.

  • Artistic License – Sports: Josie Mac's sparring match is conducted improperly. Neither she or her opponent are wearing headgear or mouth guards, and the match ends with Josie knocking the other man out cold, which is never done intentionally in sparring.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Alfred socks Selina right in the face, and even her make-up isn't smudged.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Edward's date with Miss Kringle is at the Chez Moi... or "my (his) place".
  • Blood Knight: Barnes appears to be one, at one point telling Lee to get ready for all the dead bad guys he'll be sending her way.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Galavan blackmails Penguin by holding his mother captive and threatening her death if Penguin doesn't cooperate.
  • False Flag Operation: Galavan has Penguin stage an attack on him, in order to make him look like even more of a hero. As a bonus, it directs the police's attention away from himself.
  • Honey Trap: Theo seems to be setting his niece up as a kid-friendly version for Bruce.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: Nygma remarks that he's glad that Kristen's abusive former boyfriend is dead — supposedly, he just left town.
  • Mood-Swinger: Butch has apparently been left bipolar ever since Fish's death.
  • Mythology Gag: This isn't the first time in the Batman mythos that a crooked official is the "target" of a drive-by shooting he himself arranged during a public speech. Galavan is even the first to duck, just like Gil Mason in "Shadow of the Bat."
  • New Meat: Barnes recruits members of the Strike Team straight out of the Academy because they wouldn't yet have their idealism tarnished by working as a cop in Gotham.
  • The Purge: An apparently good-guy version. Barnes's first action upon arriving at the station is calling out the most obviously corrupt officers and firing them.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Gordon marches into Penguin's lair and tells him that not only do the GCPD know that he's behind the recent murders/attempted murders of mayoral candidates, but that they're under new management that won't make deals with him anymore. But, as Penguin points out, he came to say all this to Penguin alone — no warrant, no backup, no witnesses to the fact that he and Penguin have cut deals in the past.
  • Take That!: Two of the cops Barnes fires are named Coulson and Hightower.
  • Training from Hell: From Bruce's perspective, how Alfred starts off keeping his promise to train him: instead of picking him up after school, Alfred drops off sneakers and exercise clothing and leaves for home.
Alfred: Now I clocked Wayne Manor at exactly six and a half miles, should take ninety minutes to two hours, depending on how often you stop of course. (Bruce gives him a Blank Stare) You said you wanted to train, to prepare. Well, this is it.
Bruce: Wait! You...you expect me to...to walk?
Alfred: No, Master Bruce. I expect you to run.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Selina killed Reggie in order to protect Bruce. Alfred slaps her for it.
  • Visionary Villain: Galavan plans to tear down much of Gotham's residential areas in order to build a new metropolitan skyline in their place.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Alfred, seeing Selina for the first time in several months, greets her and then slugs her in the jaw for of her murder of Reggie. (If killing the man who almost killed him seems like an odd sticking point, that's just how good chums they were.)
