Well-dressed businessmen open the episode with a brutal fight to the death. It's up to Bullock and Gordon to find out why.
Tropes:
- Back-Alley Doctor: Bullock and Gordon go see one for intel. He clocks a guy on the head as a form of anesthesia.
- Blood Sport: Sionis doesn't just have his would-be employees fight to the death, all his current employees watch it on a closed-circuit feed.
- Don't Explain the Joke: "That's the deal, right doc? You give us info and we let you keep operating? That's a pun. Operating."
- Fingore: During the opening fight, one of the men bites the other one's thumb off.
- Hunting the Most Dangerous Game: Sionis changes the game when Gordon shows up. Whoever kills the cop gets the job. And a million dollars.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Bruce delivers one to the bully who insulted his mother, with Alfred's help (Alfred gives him his father's watch, which he fashions into knuckledusters). Then Alfred stops him when he's gone far enough.
- Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Subverted. Nygma isn't actually the medical examiner. When the ME shows up, he angrily kicks Nygma out of the morgue.
- Pretender Diss: Bullock knows that Gordon is having trouble with the fact that when Zsasz showed up, the station emptied out as they all fled rather than help Gordon. Bullock despises them and calls them cowards. Captain Essen agrees with the assessment and self-applies it. Later he calls them out loud and angry.
- Red Herring: Gordon spots a trail of blood leading into the bathroom at Sionis Investments, only to find a guy with all ten fingers and a nosebleed. Subverted when a man missing a thumb steps out of a stall.
