Super Cool Party People

Lorelai is embarrassed about her wedding toast and too hungover to abide noise. Rory tries to visit Logan at the hospital. She has to enlist Paris to call the hospital and find out what's going on. Luke is back and tells Lorelai he's going to throw April's birthday party, but when it happens he realizes he is too clueless to throw a party and enlists Lorelai to spice things up. Anna doesn't like it.

Tropes

  • Blatant Lies: Lorelai pretends to be a fan of Vanessa Lachey.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Subverted, as Rory calls out Logan's old man.
  • Card Games: The girls at April's birthday party play card games before Lorelai gets there.
  • Catch-22 Dilemma: Anna unknowlingly gives Lorelai this by saying she can't bond with April before she's married to Luke, but Luke doesn't want to get married until things are right with April. He doesn't make it easier by saying he doesn't really want Lorelai in April's life because she'll like Lorelai better than she likes him.
  • Compliment Backfire: April thinks it's weird that anyone would compliment her bone structure, seeing as it's her skull.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Luke thinks he doesn't need to arrange any activities at a birthday party because he thought the birthday party was the activity.
  • Dark Humor: Rory jokes about swapping the newborns in the maternity ward around.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Lorelai tells Luke how she manipulates him to agree with her about clothes and how she sometimes learns to like clothes he likes, and realizes he picked out all her favorite clothes.
  • Foreshadowing: Miss Patty assures Lorelai she'll get Luke to the altar someday.
  • Hypocrite: Mitchum was in the Life and Death Brigade, but chooses to boycott his son for still being in that brigade and doing stupid reckless stuff like you're supposed to.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Luke basically tells Lorelai he doesn't want her in his daughter's life.
  • Irony: Paris feels it's this that as a third-year med student she knows all about recessive eye color genes in fruit flies but not how to read a medical journal.
  • It's All About Me: Michel constructs the Dragonfly inn's website to be all about himself.
  • Lampshade: Luke calls Lorelai "practically a cartoon character".
  • Parental Abandonment: Downplayed since Logan is an adult, but when he was airlifted to a New York hospital in critical condition, his father decided to punish him by refusing to visit him in the hospital, and his mother immediately checked into a spa.
  • Product Placement: Bonnie Bell lipgloss.
  • Public Secret Message: According to Paris, medical journals are meant to be unreadable until you're a fourth-year surgical resident.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Rory calls out Collin and Finn for not taking Logan's injuries seriously.
  • Shoddy Shindig: Luke offers to throw a birthday party for his newly-found 13-year-old daughter. He's not experienced with kids or teens and doesn't plan any activities. All the guests are super bored and also intimidated by his grumpy personality. Lorelai saves the day by taking the girls to a beauty shop and having the girls experiment with make-up. And she also suggests making it a sleepover, which the girls absolutely love.
  • Shout-Out
  • Squee: The girls when Loralei announces that she's taking them to the beauty shop and have them experiment with makeup. They also squee when she suggests making it a sleepover.
  • Themed Party:
    • Rory's 14th birthday party consisted of a scavenger hunt.
    • April's 13th birthday party is about makeup and Molly Ringwald.
  • Title Drop: The episode title is how Lorelai said good-bye to people at the wedding reception.
Sookie: "Super cool party people bid you super cool adieu!"
    Lorelai: (confused stare)
Sookie: That's how you were saying good-bye to people at the wedding.
