  • Boot Camp Episode: The episode delves into the training that Providence soldiers have to go through, earning a greater appreciation of them from Rex.

  • Coming in Hot: The first test of "Pain Week" involves Providence Cadets learning how to safely crash-land a Providence Fighter Jet. Rex opts to airlift the other Cadets out of the plane, resulting in them having to take the test again.
Hutton: The goal was to safely crash-land the plane. So you four are going to have to do it again, and again, until you GET IT RIGHT!

  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Rex during several parts of Pain Week, with the biggest examples being the Crash-Landing Test. Hutton points out that Rex is just one guy, and that Rex can't be everywhere when a problem happens.

  • Damager, Healer, Tank: Ultimately what Providence's relationship with Rex is shown to be: with Rex as the Tank/Healer while Providence soldiers are the DPS. Best shown when Kenway and the other Providence Cadets regroup with weapons to help distract the EVOs' that are piling on top of an overwhelmed Rex.
Kenway Jones: We do our jobs so he can do his.

  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Hutton during the parts where he is training Providence Cadets, all other times he's very cordial, and is quick to point out that Rex is not going to be everywhere when an accident happens in the field.

  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: This is averted with Providence Cadets on the firing range, but actually played very straightly with both Rex and Noah as they fail to hit the target.
