This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Call-Back: Caliban verbally "holds for a laugh" after telling a bad joke, just like his creator.
  • Deus ex Machina: Parodied and lampshaded when Dr. Weller's hologram pops out of Caliban right when the team needs him the most. It's not an actual one narrative wise since the "Omega Protocol" was shown being put in place the previous episode, but to the pilots it may as well be since they never saw that coming.
Dr. Weller: Hello. Well, here's your deus ex machina. Or would it be doctor ex machina. Well, horrible cliche either way, I suppose...
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Cal mentions that one of the "warmer welcomes" comparable to the empty base is "the ex wife". Moments later, the crew meets Weller's ex.
  • Heroic BSoD: While scouting in his Holon around their landed transport, Chase momentarily breaks down, falling to his knees in despair after the events of the previous episode.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Nemesis keeps speaking to Chase as they flee from the Union, telling him it's only a matter of time until they find and destroy him.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Played with. The five Holons are repaired and refitted into their next forms at RTASA, but its in the second to last episode of the season.
  • Name Order Confusion: Holcroft refers to Kazu as "Iida Kazu", in the proper Eastern order, while most references to him in the series, including the readout behind Holcroft at that very moment, call him "Kazu Iida".
  • The Reveal:
    • Hinted at in earlier episodes, but Cammie figures out that Nemesis is still tied into their mindsharing network, meaning he (and his Union masters) have been listening to everything they've been saying and thinking since they started using the Holons.
    • Caliban is actually a human-scale Holon, a Super Prototype of the larger mecha versions. He has copies of all of Dr. Weller's data and notes on gen:LOCK technology, as well as elements of Weller's personality that were uploaded into him over the years.
  • Shout-Out: Add another Star Wars shout out to the list. Cammie delivers the classic "I've got a bad feeling about this." Chase isn't amused.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Caliban finally speaks in this episode, and he has Weller's voice, due to being an early gen:LOCK cyberbrain possessing a sliver of Weller's mind. He reveals that Dr. Weller put it on an extended mute because he couldn't deal with the robot's sense of humor. Chase later puts Caliban back on mute when they arrive at RTASA, both to not make the situation with the guards worse and because Caliban's jokes were getting annoying.
  • Trust Password: Necessary to unlock Dr. Weller's final message.
Caliban: Julian Chase, code phrase required.
Chase: (Thinks for a second) Let the good times roll?
    Caliban: Accepted.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Nemesis mockingly asks this of Chase via cyber-telepathy.
Nemesis: Kinda drives you crazy, doesn't it? When you realize you can't cry in one of these things. There's a lot that's fuzzy, but some moments, some memories... Are you still human if you can't cry? Or sleep? Or dream?
