Watch it or die trying

Fry and Leela attempt to spend a romantic evening together but keep on getting interrupted by other people. Leela has a targeted advertisement promote a resort that caters to only one couple at a time, with no other people, so they decide to go there for their romantic evening together. The other members of Planet Express are making a delivery to Simian 7 and discover Fry and Leela are in a zoo.

Tropes

  • Amicable Exes: Subverted with Leela and her ex, Sean. While Leela doesn't have a problem with him, Sean clearly doesn't think too much of Leela, mostly bragging about himself, and apparently had told his wife that Leela was crazy, and he dumped her though Leela assures it was mutual. Either way, they don't seem to be on particularly friendly terms even many years after not seeing each other.
  • Artistic License – Biology:
    • The proboscis monkeys are drawn without tails.
    • The gazelles in the zoo have body shapes and faces more like those of a deer than an actual gazelle.
    • The thylacines have flexible and striped tails, unlike the real animal. The picture on the sign of the exhibit gets this right, though.
    • The Professor claims Simian 7 is home to all kinds of primates and forbids humans, despite humans also being primates. Clearly, he meant to say all kinds of non-human primates.
    • Gorillas are as always shown doing their Primal Chest-Pound with fists (which they can't form) instead of flat hands.
  • Attractive Bent Species: Amy's marmoset pajamas gain her much unwanted attention from the males of Simian 7.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At a buffet in Simian 7, Gunther picks a flea off of the back of a primate and eats it. Amy is disgusted, because he used his hands instead of the tongs.
  • Bare-Bottomed Monkey: One of the few instances in media where the bare buttocks of the monkey is correctly presented as a display of sexual attraction. Amy (who is disguised as a marmoset) gets the attention of a sapient mandrill who shows off his blue bottom to her, which Gunther calls him out on.
  • Birds of a Feather: Sean and Darlene are very similar, both are very cheap about everything (even meeting at the 99 cent store) and both are jerks to Leela.
  • Brandishment Bluff: Bender fakes having a gun by hiding a carrot under his trenchcoat in order to mug people in the park. He reveals this to Fry and Leela when they are taking a romantic walk together and still demanding their money. Leela proceeds to beat him up while she and Fry make off with his loot.
  • The Bus Came Back: Gunther from "Mars University" has moved to Simian 7.
  • Chair Reveal: Parodied. Dr. Banjo is revealed as the head of the zoo by turning around on his tire swing. Awkwardly, it just keeps twisting around.
  • Continuity Nod: Among the animals in the zoo are a Cyclophage ("Rebirth"), a bone vampire ("Fry Am the Eggman") and a Moon Worm (mentioned but not shown on "Crimes of the Hot").
  • Covert Pervert: Zoidberg pretends to freak out and be disgusted when he sees Fry and Leela having sex. Then when his friends leave, he uncovers his eyes to watch them.
  • Diner Brawl: Sean's wife Darlene mentions this after she and Leela throw insults at each other, sarcastically saying she would "Denny's fight" her but she and Sean can leave now that the shuttle is fixed. They both proceed to leave as fast as possible.
  • Dress Hits Floor: Leela, trying to convince Fry to go skinny dipping with her, takes off her bathing suit and Fry gawks at her.
  • Eaten Alive: Zoidberg, Bender, and Amy are eaten by a Moon Worm, and have to wait until it passes them to get out.
  • Engineered Public Confession: Dr. Banjo uses this to gleefully reveal to the rescue party that Fry and Leela don't like how Zoidberg smells, are annoyed by Bender's ego, Leela thinks Amy's marmoset pajamas are stupid, and Fry still hates Gunther despite not having seen him in years.
  • Held Gaze: Fry and Leela are seen doing this repeatedly throughout the episode as they are shown to be deeply in love now.
  • I Call Him "Mister Happy": Fry initially refuses to go swimming in case someones sees "Wingus and the Ping-Pong Boys".
  • I Resemble That Remark!:
Bender: After they said I have an obnoxious ego!? Me, the magnificent Bender!?
  • Interspecies Romance: When Amy is disguised as a marmoset, she gains the attraction of a business mandrill (even though he says he normally isn't drawn to New World monkeys) and is considered attractive by Dr. Banjo the orangutan.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: Happens a lot in the episode, Fry and Leela trying very hard to have an intimate moment but constantly are being interrupted.
  • Jaw Drop: Fry when he sees Leela take off her bathing suit
  • Jerkass: Leela's ex Sean really isn't a nice guy. He isn't respectful to Leela at all, such as disregarding when she talks about her life and is mostly involved with himself. He also picks a fight with Fry for a dollar reed and told his wife how Leela was crazy and he dumped her. His wife seems to be like this too in the way she talks to Leela. It's enough to really upset Leela but she is comforted when her current Nice Guy boyfriend brushes it off.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: When Bender attempts to mug Fry and Leela, Leela proceeds to beat him up and she and Fry make off with Bender's stolen loot.
  • The Missus and the Ex: For both Fry and Darlene, meeting their significant other's exes. Fry picks a fight with his girlfriend's ex while Darlene simply insults her husband's ex. This was actually the whole reason Leela had been invited back, as she and Sean had been there previously when they were together. When Sean arrived with a different woman, they decided to invite Leela back, knowing she was also in a relationship with someone else and wanted to see how they would react to each other as a "social experiment" to make the exhibit more popular.
  • Modesty Towel: When Leela and Fry get out of the pool after Leela's ex shows up, she wraps herself in a towel around her ex before she gets redressed.
  • Moment Killer: Fry and Leela want to have a romantic moment for themselves and stay at Planet Express after everybody else left. Scruffy is cleaning, as always. They try to have a romantic date in Elzar's. Zoidberg works there as well. They take a stroll in the park. Bender tries to mug them, though they manage to mug him instead and run off laughing. They try to be alone at Leela's apartment. Nibbler is there, and he behaves like a pet but he's an intelligent creature, so they are not "alone". Finally, they take a vacation to a place where they may be completely alone. Fry met Leela's former boyfriend, who was there with his wife and couldn't leave; and it was later revealed that the vacation resort was actually a "human habitat" in the zoo of the planet of the apes.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • It is not said how Sean and Leela met or how long they were together. Leela stresses their break-up was mutual but Sean told his wife that she was crazy and he dumped her.
    • What Fry and Leela did the rest of the time they were there is not seen. Fry tries to say but Leela cuts him off and they shared a loving gaze. It's obvious that they enjoy themselves though and are very much in love.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Amy poses as “Sparkles” with a set of marmoset pajamas. Justified, as she didn’t have a marmoset costume and the Professor needed a temporary substitute for Leela, since Humans are forbidden on Simian 7.
  • People Zoo: What the resort ends up being.
  • Planet of Hats: Simian 7, a planet ruled by apes (and monkeys, tarsiers, lemurs, and other non-human primates).
  • Psycho Ex-Girlfriend: Sean apparently described Leela as this to his wife. Leela is understandably offended.
  • Rewatch Bonus: The "fireflies" in the episode getting more prevalent in certain scenes. These are actually camera flashes from visitors to the zoo.
  • Self-Serving Memory: Leela stresses her breakup with Sean was mutual but Sean told his wife that Leela was crazy and he dumped her. It's never addressed which is the correct version of what happened though, so we don't know who is right or who is self-serving.
  • Series Continuity Error: Gunther's hat which gives him his sapience is shown to be intact in this episode, despite being crushed at the end of "Mars University".
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: Doubles as a Wham Shot as the camera pulls away when Fry and Leela start to have sex and instead show Amy, Bender, and Zoidberg's horrified reactions to seeing them.
  • Shoulders-Up Nudity: When Leela is naked in the water, we only see her shoulders and cleavage.
  • Shown Their Work:
    • When a mandrill starts hitting on Amy who is disguised as a marmoset, Gunther berates him for it and sarcastically dares him to show off his buttocks, and the mandrill does exactly that. While this seems like a Joke of the Butt common in the Bare-Bottomed Monkey trope, display of the rump is how many species of monkeys show sexual attraction. And yes, male mandrills do have blue-skinned buttocks (especially if they're dominant males).
    • In the same scene as the above, the mandrill refers to marmosets as New World monkeys while alluding to himself as an Old World monkey (by stating he normally isn't attracted to New World monkeys).
  • Skinny Dipping: Leela suggests to Fry that they do this. He is at first hesitant but joins her after she gets naked. It also a great amount of progression in their relationship, that Leela does legitimately find Fry attractive.
  • Stealing from the Hotel: Right before Sean and Darlene leave, they proceed to stuff as many of the complimentary snacks in their pockets as they can.
  • The Stinger: Bender reveals to Fry and Leela that they were in a zoo.
  • Swallowed Whole: Bender, Amy and Zoidberg get swallowed by a moon worm just as they're about to break into the Human Habitat and rescue Fry and Leela. It takes a week for them to pass through the digestive system, just in time to see Fry and Leela head home.
  • Talking in Bed: Fry and Leela do this while cuddling in bed, with Fry remarking how nice it is that it's just the two of them, and both complaining about the annoying habits of their co-workers who, unbeknownst to them, heard everything.
  • Two-Person Pool Party: Probably why Leela suggested they go Skinny Dipping was this, until they were interrupted by her ex.
  • Unseen No More: Leela's ex-boyfriend Sean had previously been mentioned in the show but never seen. This episode would be his first on-screen appearance.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After Gunther is tranquilized by Dr. Banjo, he's not seen nor mentioned for the remainder of the episode.
