The one bright spot in your life!

The crew eat at a Fishy Joe's after a delivery, but Leela gets upset at the vague sources of fast food, so the crew heads to a farmer's market. After he learns the eggs are fertile, Fry resolves to hatch one. Discovering he hatched a bone vampire, they send it back to its homeworld, threatening the populace.

Tropes

  • Accidental Hero: At the end of the episode, it's revealed that Mr. Peppy's habit of consuming sheep is actually a good thing. Not only does it help keep the sheep population under control, but since he does so by consuming their bones, he leaves the wool and meat, meaning his attacks still leave behind a usable carcass (if anything, he inadvertently makes things more convenient for the farmers by de-boning them). When the people of Doohan 6 realize this, they go from crying for the beast's head to hailing him as a savior.
  • Adopt the Food: Zigzagged. Leela buys some fertilized eggs at the farmers' market, and Fry, realizing that the eggs have the potential to hatch into a living creature, decides not to eat his egg and let it hatch. And then he'll eat it. As time passes, however, Fry gets attached and decides to let the creature live instead. Then the egg falls on the floor and splatters, so Fry lets Zoidberg have what remains. However, the creature inside the egg actually survives, and Fry keeps it as a pet, despite it being very destructive.
  • All Animals Are Dogs: Mr. Peppy has a very doglike behavior such as peeing on a fire hydrant, being led around on a collar and leash, and likes to play fetch with a tennis ball.
  • Chupacabra: The bone vampire is essentially the bone-sucking version of a Chupacabra right down to preying on livestock.
  • Gigantic Gulp: When Leela asks for a small drink at the pub, she is given an aquarium full of whiskey.
  • The Great Exterminator: Angus MacZongo hunted the dreaded Bone Vampire to extinction on the planet Doohan 6 (where they were a threat to the local sheep population) and has been living off of the idol status ever since. When the crew brings Mr. Peppy back to the planet, he sees this as an opportunity to renew his "hero" status.
  • Last of His Kind: The bone vampire, which is extinct on its native planet. Fortunately for it, the species can reproduce asexually.
  • Lite Crème: Leela orders a fruit cup, only to discover...
Leela: Oh, god. Fruit is spelt F-R-O-O-T. And it's got quotation marks round it!
  • The Little Detecto: Bender has a liquor detector.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Fry does not even seem to notice the now full grown Mr. Peppy's spit burn off half his face when he licks him. Granted, he probably had time to get used to that, along with many other injuries.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Subverted, because Leela feels like killing would be a hassle.
    Zoidberg: I say kill it.
Fry: But I love it and it loves me.
    Zoidberg: Kill them both!
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: Used where Fry gets a monster (Mr. Peppy) as a pet:
Fry: Mr. Peppy is not like Zoidberg. He's my friend.
    Zoidberg: Awww!
  • Non-Indicative Name: Fishy Joe's serves mutton nuggets.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Leela somehow managed to blackmail the entire crew into coming to work early and eating a healthy breakfast she was making. It's never revealed what they did, as they fulfilled her requirements for her not to blab about it.
    • According to Hermes, slapping Zoidberg across the face is considered "sexual harassment". How that came about or what happened to lead to that is left unsaid.
  • Nutritional Nightmare: The Fishy Joe's resturant serves everything with cheese filling in or on it.
  • Planet of Steves: Doohan 6, where all the inhabitants are named Angus.
  • "Scooby-Doo" Hoax: When it appears Mr. Peppy is actually eating sheep, it turns out to be McZongo in a costume. Lampshaded by Amy:
    Amy: Jinkies! He Scooby-Doo'd us!
  • Shoo the Dog: Fry attempts to do this with Mr. Peppy, but it doesn't quite work—not because Mr. Peppy refuses to leave, but because Fry, despite his insistence, keeps refusing to let go even while the bone vampire struggles to follow his directions.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Smashed Eggs Hatching: Double Subverted. Fry takes an egg from an unknown species and tries to hatch it. Eventually he drops it, and at first it appears to be just a yolk inside. But then an alien creature crawls out of the mess and starts spraying acid everywhere.
  • Titled After the Song: The episode title is a play on "I am the Eggman", a line from The Beatles' "I Am the Walrus".
