Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 4 E 15 We Need To Talk About Evan

Go To

Jessica pushes Evan to win Student of the Month so that she can rub it in the face of her new frenemy, Matthew Chestnut's wife. Louis feels like he is in Kenny Roger's shadow and tries to promote a new menu item with his own name on it. After comparing their "dating experiences" with Matthew's son, Eddie and Emery decide it's time they learn how to unlock a bra.

  • The Art of Bra Removal: Eddie and Emery's plot centers around this, with them practicing with a bra on a pillow (and later, a Mrs. Claus decoration) and absolutely failing.
  • Epic Fail: While attempting The Art of Bra Removal on a pillow, Emery is only able to get half of the hooks off before his hand cramps up, and asks Eddie to try the rest. Within seconds, Eddie not only fails to finish unhooking the bra, he admits with great frustration that he accidentally rehooked the part Emery had done.
  • Incredibly Obvious Bug: After finally agreeing to let Evan attend counselling, Jessica first tries to leave her faux-Chanel purse in the room with a tape recorder sticking out, before dropping a microphone into a potted plant, both of which Mr. Tim points out and has her remove.
  • Masochist's Meal: Upset that people keep ordering only the menu items Kenny Roger added, Louis tries to promote "Louis Huang's Five-Alarm Chili", which has Szechuan Peppercorns as one of the secret spices. In addition to knocking Matthew Chestnut out because he's allergic to peppercorn, a later episode states that the peppercorns gave Marvin permanent bowel distress.
  • The Mole: When Matthew sees that Louis is disheartened over everyone ordering Kenny Roger's clam chowder over his dishes, Matthew offers to pose as a customer in order to get the ball rolling. Unfortunately, he turns out to be allergic to the chili.
  • Mushroom Samba: While suffering from an allergic reaction due to the peppercorns in Louis's chili, Matthew has a vision of himself and Louis driving to Miami in an RV while listening to "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred.
  • Noodle Incident: When Jessica and Evan confront the school's principal for awarding a different student "Student of the Month", pulling out a photo they took of a bumper sticker bragging about it, he initially thinks it's a candid photo from a Miami vacation and claims he only "dressed up" the one time.
  • Pyromaniac: When Jessica originally bursts into the school councilor's office in order to tell him not to turn Evan into a slacker, he's in the middle of dealing with an ordinary-looking female student who has an urge to set things on fire.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Evan hits his early in the episode, when taking on a lot of new projects at school to become the next Student of the Month; specifically, when the girls on the school dance committee decide to take a break just to gossip, he yells at them to focus and throws confetti in their eyes.
  • The Scrooge: While Jessica has a discussion with the therapist at Evan's school and learns some valuable information about the need for monitoring mental health, the point that ultimately convinces Jessica to let Evan attend therapy is learning that the school offers the service for free.
  • Sidetracked by the Analogy: When Jessica finds out that the school's therapist has his own therapist, she thinks it's absurd and compares it to a barber paying another barber for a haircut. The therapist then asks how else she thinks a barber gets a haircut, which helps convince her to listen to his advice.
  • Therapy Is for the Weak: The Jessica/Evan plot centers around this. Evan gets advised by a school therapist to pace himself, and when Jessica tells Evan to ignore that and keep working hard if he wants to be successful in life (not helped by Mrs. Chestnut being dismissive towards the family when she finds out), Evan ends up overworked and having a panic attack during dinner. This causes Jessica to reevaluate her mindset and let Evan get the assistance he needs, followed by telling Mrs. Chestnut a list of various high-profile celebrities that have publicly admitted to also attending therapy, such as Oprah and James Brown.
  • Two First Names: One of the complaints Jessica has with the councilor at Evan's school, "Mr. Tim", is that he shouldn't undermine his own authority by being on a first-name basis with his clients. He then states his full name is actually Richard Tim.
