Go To

Honey's overbearing mother ridicules her idea of attending a parenting class. Louis and Marvin's free cruise quickly turns into a gambling getaway gone south. Eddie's friends are wary of his new crush at school.

  • Abusive Parents: After getting into an argument over the parenting class and Honey leaves in tears, Honey's mother decides to head straight to the airport, saying that Honey's always been demanding of attention and she's not in the mood to satisfy her. Jessica is aghast that she'd just abandon Honey in a time of need, and comforts Honey alone.
  • Brick Joke: At the start of the episode, Jessica is actually glad that she's not going on the cruise in January (when the episode is set), because that's the statistically most likely time for a passenger to fall overboard. In The Tag, all of the cruise passengers are reimbursed because of a fallen passenger.
  • Buffet Buffoonery: In order to "make back" the money he loses during the cruise, Louis eats a ton of oysters from a seafood buffet. In The Tag, when flashing back to the announcement of a passenger going overboard, he has an entire dining table of empty plates and looks absolutely miserable.
  • Call-Back: The cruise that Louis and Marvin go on is the one Honey and Jessica won in "B as in Best Friends", which they can't go on themselves due to the scheduling conflict of Honey's mom arriving (and Jessica's fear of falling overboard). And Trent starts having suspicions about transfer student Karen after a safety locker inspection, which he does as part of his safety patrol tasks, a position he gained in "Slide Effect".
  • Disgusting Public Toilet: Implied to be the majority of washrooms at Eddie's schools, as his friends are upset that he'd show transfer student Karen the "good" toilet when he offers her a tour, and Eddie's even more angry when she breaks up with him and he complains to his friends that now she's bound to share it with her new female friends.
  • False Friend: Jessica and Honey's mother agree that the parenting class is a waste of Honey's time and money...but when Jessica tells this to Honey, Honey's mother quickly betrays Jessica and says she's fully supportive of it. Honey immediately realizes her mother's lying in order to try and manipulate them both.
  • Has a Type: While doing a safety patrol locker inspection, Trent finds out that transfer student Karen's last boyfriend was also Asian, and Eddie's friends worry that she's only interested in Eddie for his race. When Eddie finds out she's had three Asian boyfriends in the past, as well as a poster of an Asian guitarist in her bedroom, he confronts her about it. She states it's a coincidence and she values personalities and talents more than their looks, having chosen to spend time with Eddie himself because he was wearing a shirt with The X-Files logo and she likes the show, and then she cuts ties with Eddie for accusing her of being superficial.
  • Indirect Kiss: After showing transfer student Karen around (and before everyone becomes wary of her), she and Eddie share a can of soda, with Eddie's friends celebrating the moment her lips touch the can.
  • Letting the Air out of the Band: When Louis first tries blackjack on the cruise, the music is triumphant as he has four simultaneous hands that beat the dealer's 13. Then the dealer draws two more cards and gets a 21, busting Louis as the music quickly dies down.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: For most of the episode, one of Eddie's friends has a bump on his arm that he believes is due to a dragonfly implanting its eggs in his skin, though it's faded away by The Tag.
  • New-Age Retro Hippie: The parenting class Honey wants to attend is led by one, "Wilhelmina Page: Child Sage", conflicting with the views of Jessica and Honey's mother.
  • Secret Test of Character: Eddie subjects Karen to these after his friends' initial suspicions that she Has a Type, offering her choices between a candy bar or imported Asian snack, a Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee film, and whether to help Evan or one of Evan's Caucasian classmates tie their shoes. Each time, Karen picks the non-Asian option, which settles the matter...up until he's invited into her room and sees pictures of her past Asian boyfriends.
  • Something We Forgot: In The Tag, Louis returns home elated because, despite accidentally going massively in debt due to gambling and long-distance phone charges, a passenger fell off the boat and everyone got complete refunds. Then Jessica asks if he remembered to pick her up a souvenir like he promised, and he immediately freezes.
