Recap / Freelancers S2 E4 "Learn, Fun, Can"

Go To

VPC gets hired to film a video for Miss Gwen's class in the daycare center Learn, Fun, Can. While filming the kids, Miss Gwen suddenly disappears, so Micah and Devin try to track her down while the rest of the crew have to hold down the fort. Zona quickly wins the affection of all the daycare kids, while Owen gets schooled by them. Meanwhile, Ryan falls back into an old addiction he had as a child when a child offers him crayons.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Bat Deduction: Devin and Micah engage in this to attempt to determine where Miss Gwen has gone. They conclude that she has fled to Mexico with an illegal fireworks seller. In reality, she's right there in the parking lot where they're standing.
  • Berserk Button: Ryan freaks out when Micah says pandas abandon their babies all the time.
  • Butt-Monkey: After refusing to dance upon the kids' demands, Owen gets his share of derision and ridicule from them. For example, one girl comes up with a lot of insults for him, the crayon-dealing kid tells him to chill out, and he gets booed during story time.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Owen tries flirting with Miss Gwen but fails miserably.
  • Child Hater: Subverted. Although Zona says at the start of the episode that toddlers give her the heebie-jeebies, she changes her mind after she meets the kids daycare kids and wins their affection.
  • Coat Full of Contraband: The crayon-dealing daycare kid has a coat full of cartons of crayons.
  • Continuity Nod: Petunia, the doll from the episode "Cursed!", can be seen briefly inside the refrigerator when Owen opens it to get some yogurt.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Gandolfini offers VPC a bag of pickled mule, which he says is "the tuna of the land."
  • Defective Detective: The titular character of Divorced Detective M.D. fights for custody of his kids, but according to the theme song he never gets it.
  • Every Man Has His Price: Miss Gwen manages to bribe VPC into not reporting her by offering them over $1000.
  • G-Rated Drug: Crayons have some kind of euphoric influence on Ryan.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Miss Gwen says VPC appears normal to her, but then she finds Ryan in the closet munching on crayons.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: The crayon-dealing kid tells Owen to chill out, and Owen snaps back that he doesn't need to chill out.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: When Devin and Micah corner Miss Gwen in her car, she convinces them that she will return to the class with them willingly. But as soon as they leave the car, she locks them out.
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: Downplayed. Owen responds very negatively to being called a chicken by one of the preschoolers, but ultimately does nothing but bluster because he's intimidated by her.
  • Off the Wagon: Ryan used to eat lots of crayons as a kid, but has since stopped, at least until a kid offers him some and he gets addicted again.
  • Show Within a Show: Miss Gwen leaves the classroom to watch Divorced Detective M.D. and the Title Sequence for this show is shown over the closing credits.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Downplayed with the crayon-dealing kid, who acts as a G-Rated Drug dealer.
  • Unnecessary Combat Roll: Devin and Micah do quite a few front flips while searching for Ms. Gwen. Micah's attempt to roll over a car's hood sets off its alarm system.
