Recap / Frasier S 05 E 18 Bad Dog

Go To

Days before an award ceremony for radio personnel, Bulldog appears to save Roz from an armed mugger. It appears that he's guaranteed to win the "Man of the Year" award for his bravery...except that Frasier knows the truth, and is determined to prove Bulldog's cowardice to the world.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Hero: When Frasier points out someone with a gun while they're all in line at Café Nervosa, Bulldog appears to put himself between the gunman and Roz to protect her. However, Frasier could tell from where Bulldog was looking that he thought someone else was the gunman, and was using Roz as a Human Shield.
  • Award Show: The main event of the episode is such a ceremony
  • Dirty Coward: Bulldog, big time. After hearing Frasier say that there's a man with a gun in the cafe, Bulldog grabs Roz, who's pregnant by the way, and uses her as a Human Shield. And then later on, during the award show in Bulldog's honour, Martin tells him that he sees another man with a gun and Bulldog does the exact same thing, this time with his own mother.
  • Guilt Complex: When Bulldog refuses to be honest and admit his own cowardice to anyone but Frasier, Frasier tries to invoke one of these as the announcer for the "Man of the Year" award, having invited Bulldog's old school coach, his priest, and his mother to all attend. However, it completely fails, and Bulldog accepts the award with enthusiasm.
  • Human Shield: The truth behind Bulldog's heroism was an attempt to use Roz as one. He repeats the act at the end, this time using his mother.
  • Liar Revealed: The episode ends with Martin, fed up over Frasier's anxiety over Bulldog being a Karma Houdini, telling Bulldog that someone in the crowd of people honoring him has a gun. Immediately, Bulldog uses his own mother as another Human Shield, making everyone realize how horrible Bulldog truly is.
  • Mistaken for Servant: The "technical" awards that Niles attends turns out to be casual dress, but he showed up in a tuxedo, and he later tells his family he was mistaken for a waiter.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Niles is also attending the radio awards show, because he was nominated after participating in a special feature, which he is enthusiastic about. However, not only is his "technical" award show disappointingly more casual, he fails to actually win what he was nominated for.
