Recap / First Wave S 1 E 9 Joshua

Go To

There's no quatrain for this journal entry. I guess Nostradamus didn't see every little mess I'd walk into. Too bad. I could've used the warning.
Opening Narrative

Pursued by law enforcement through the forests of Montana, Cade finds he has more than human enemies to worry about.

Tropes:

  • Antagonist Title: Played with. Joshua is certainly antagonistic towards Cade for much of the episode, but by the end Cade is tentatively calling him an unexpected ally.
  • Batman Gambit: At a fork in the path, Cade tricks Joshua onto the path where he can gain the upper hand by suggesting they go the other way. Joshua, expecting Cade to try something, chooses the path Cade warned against.
  • Call-Back: Cade knows Joshua is a Gua as he saw him kill Elton Beleye in "Speaking in Tongues".
  • Fantastic Racism: Played against the other kind. Joshua asserts that humans are primitive and bigoted, and that he chose an African American husk to explore this for himself. Considering that he shoots one of his own people to save Cade, it's possible that this was all denial.
  • G-Rated Drug: When he tries to use salt on Joshua's wounds, Cade instead finds that salt affects the Gua like heroin. As this makes Joshua nice and talkative, Cade decides that's close enough.
  • Guile Hero: Physically overpowered by Joshua, Cade manages to trick his captor onto a path where he can push him onto a tree branch Cade spotted earlier, thus gaining the upper hand.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: After tricking Joshua onto the right path, Cade shoves backwards and forces his captor onto a tree stump with a sticking out branch that goes right through him. It's nonfatal with the Gua Healing Factor but definitely gives Cade the upper hand for the rest of the episode.
  • Proud Warrior Race: According to Joshua, "Gua" means "power to overcome".
