A high school student called Diana Black, is accused of killing three important people that she claims were demons, not people. Cade and Eddie travel to Salem, Oregon, where they learn that the so-called witch has actually been killing aliens.
Tropes:
- Destroy the Evidence: The pages of the Book of Shadows that detail how to spot "demons" are destroyed with the Gua agent as his body dissolves.
- Doing In the Wizard: Cade explains to Diana that her "demons" are in fact aliens.
- Goth Girls Know Magic: Diana is a self-described witch and looks like a typical goth, although her "powers" are initially only shown in the form of baking cookies that poison Gua but are harmless to humans. She claims to have found the recipe in an old book, which then gets destroyed by a Gua. However, during Cade's fight with the Gua, the girl and a few other girls use some sort of ritual that possibly causes the Gua to be split in half by a falling axe.
- Hero with Bad Publicity: Diana is on trial for murder for killing three Gua agents.
- Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: The Gua agent is killed by a falling axe just as Diana and her coven do a spell to help Cade. Coincidence? Maybe!
- MacGuffin: The Book of Shadows, which details the spell that allows the caster to identify Gua on sight. The book is recovered, but the pages are destroyed.
- The Infiltration: Cade goes undercover as a member of Diana's legal team. Which is fairly brazen for a guy on the run for murder.
- Title Drop: Diana can spot "demons," or Gua, thanks to a spell detailed in her Book of Shadows.
