Recap / Final Space S 2 E 13 The Sixth Key

Go To

After finally retrieving all five of the dimensional keys, the Crimson Light travels to inner space so they can try to free Bolo.

Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Gary laughs at AVA's joke about sunny days on the sun.
  • And Show It to You: Avocato, while possessed by Invictus, tells Gary the last thing he will ever see is him ripping his heart out of his chest.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: While guiding Sheryl through her therapy in the virtulazium, Tribore is distracted by two bowls from the Goodspeed household.
  • Back for the Finale: Well, season finale anyway. After disappearing in "The Remembered", Avocato finally returns, still possessed by Invictus.
  • Badass Boast: After he is freed, Bolo commands the Aracnitects to open a portal to Final Space. When they say there will be an army of Titans waiting for him, he declares he is going to kill them all.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Bolo is freed, Invictus is no longer controlling Avocato, and the Crimson Light made it to Final Space where Gary is reunited with Quinn. But Nightfall is dead, there is no telling in what condition Quinn is, and the crew has entered Invictus' domain as it gears up to give them hell.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Gary and Quinn reunited... and with Invictus in the background.
  • Fond Memories That Could Have Been: Tribore's therapy for Sheryl involves taking her into the Holodeck, and showing her an alternate reality in which she not only reconciled with her husband, but enjoyed a loving relationship with her son.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Downplayed example. Both HUE and Fox think it's a terrible idea to enlist Sheryl, but as Tribore pointed out, they're soon going to be fighting Titans and need every edge they can get.
  • Just Eat Gilligan: Bolo agrees with Gary how he also thought of making KVN the sacrifice if it didn't require an actual life.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Sheryl finally pulls one thanks to Tribore.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Nightfall allows Mooncake to destroy her in order to free Bolo.
  • Killed Off for Real: Nightfall after her Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: After Avocato is freed from Invictus's control, he has no idea what is going on or the developments that have happened. He calls Gary asking where the hell he is, is shocked from seeing Bolo, and is confused when Little Cato calls him and Gary his "dads".
  • Mook Chivalry: A heroic example; the entire Team Squad confronts Avocato/Invictus, but they still take turns in attacking him; first Sheryl and Tribore, then Fox, then KVN and H.U.E., and then Little Cato.
  • No Body Left Behind: Nightfall’s body is completely disintegrated as she makes her sacrifice.
  • Now You Tell Me: Lampshaded by Gary when he calls Bolo out on withholding the fact that a sacrifice is needed to free him. Bolo justifies his actions by stating Gary wouldn’t have come back had he known this sooner.
  • Oh Look, More Rooms!: Gary is surprised to learn that the Crimson Light has a bowling alley, a video arcade and a soda parlour with waffle Mondays, all of which the rest of the Team Squad already know about and just assumed he too knew about.
  • Sequel Hook: The Crimson Light crew is now in Final Space, setting up for the big battle with Invictus.
  • Shout-Out: Upon reuniting once and for all, Gary and Avocato do the "you son of a bitch" handshake.
  • Someone Has to Die: The Dimensional Keys need a sacrifice to work. Nightfall makes it.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Ash keeps Nightfall's helmet after the latter’s sacrifice.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Nightfall sacrifices herself to free Bolo.
    • Bolo is finally freed from his prison and proclaims he will destroy the Titans.
    • Ash uses her power to free Avocato from Invictus’s control.
    • Sheryl, after a cathartic therapy session from Tribore, finally makes an effort to stop blaming her son for her past, and officially join the Crimson Light.
    • The Aracnitects open a portal to Final Space for Bolo, but also warn that once he goes through, they will seal it.
    • Bolo leads the Crimson Light crew to Final Space, where Gary and Quinn are reunited.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Last episode revealed Tribore had build up an impressive army for his new resistance, but somehow none of them are seen or mentioned again in this episode. Considering how Tribore even recruits Sheryl since they are about to fight Titans, one would expect he’d bring his army along too.
