Recap / Film Reroll: Iron Man 3

Go To

Paulo Quiros: If you haven't seen Iron Man 3, the bad guys have Pepper — played here by Joz — and are injecting her with evil substances.

The second Bonus Scene in Film Reroll. Released almost two years after the first, it is based on the superhero movie Iron Man 3. The scene was split into two parts, with the first being featured at the end of episodes 55 and 56, (a.k.a. the third and fourth episodes of Goonies.)

We pick up In Medias Res right at the film's climax, Aldrich Killian has revealed himself as the Big Bad and has been tracked down to his hideout at the docks by Tony "Iron Man" Stark and James "War Machine" Rhodes. Killian has taken hostage both Pepper Potts — Tony's longtime colleague/love interest — and Matthew Ellis — the (fictional) incumbent President of the United States of America. The question now is, are Tony and Rhodey bad enough dudes to save the hostages and take down their foe?

And can Rhodey avoid shooting the President?

Starring Scott Aiello as Tony Stark, Kara Straitnote  as James "Rhodey" Rhodes, Jocelyn "Joz" Vammer as Pepper Potts and Paulo Quiros as the Dungeon Master.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Tony Stark is accidentally referred to as "Stony Tark," to Kara’s great amusement.
  • Anachronic Order: This was recorded before Part 2 or 3 of Goonies; as such, you can hear Andy and Jon show up towards the end.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Rhodey's superhero career is likely over, and President Ellis is seriously injured and forced to resign, eventually ending up paralyzed. However, his corrupt vice president is exposed and impeached, granting the office to Ellis' Reasonable Authority Figure third-in-command, (played by Stan Lee in a hypothetical cameo). Also, Aldrich Killian is dead and Pepper Potts may have developed superpowers.
  • Chekhov's Gun: A borderline-tragic example: Because Kara only learned Rhodey had Luck after the President was shot and taken to a hospital, it ultimately gets used at the end of the campaign in regards to the President surviving being shot.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: Pepper Potts, mostly because of Tony's rude behavior and endangerment of the hostages.
  • Disney Death: President Ellis, who gets shot thanks to a very unlucky critical failure roll. The first episode makes it seem like he's done for, but the second reveals that he miraculously survived.
  • Disney Villain Death: How Killian finally dies.
  • Exact Words: Kara managed to get Paulo to allow her to use her Luck roll on the President's survival by pointing out the mechanic in GURPS allows it to be used on outside events that effect a given player.
Paulo: That's fair, that definitely effects you. If the President dies, you're in much worse shape...
  • Foreshadowing: This Bonus Scene started at the end of Part 3 of Goonies. As such, take note of the episode description, and note the odd one out.
Goonies proceeds on apace! Scott pushes some buttons! Joz runs from a librarian! Andy goes to prison! Jon communes with technology! [Kara] shoots a president!
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: In case you didn't pick up on it yet, Rhodey accidentally shoots the President in the face.
  • Healing Factor: Killian's superpower, making him even more of a challenge to take down. Word of God is that — as in the film — Pepper has developed similar powers by the end of the campaign, but is unaware of it, as she hasn't suffered any major injuries since.
  • I Just Shot Marvin in the Face: Rhodey somehow manages to accidentally shoot the President in the head, which, given that he wore one of Tony's protective suits, is the only vulnerable part of his body. JARVIS mistakes this for a deliberate act of murder, and the first episode ends with Rhodey suspected of being a traitor. Fortunately, the situation is cleared up pretty quickly in part two.
  • Inferred Survival: Paulo makes sure to mention that the civilian dock workers clear the area before the fight starts properly.
  • Jerkass: Tony Stark, Scott even apologizes for this beforehand, saying that he's simply trying to portray the character accurately.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Yes, this bonus scene does in fact spoil most of the plot twists from the original film, including the big one that Aldrich Killian was the "real" Mandarin all along. The players even devote some time to discussing how well it worked (or didn’t).
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Towards the end of the Bonus Scene, Andy and Jon show up to Paulo's apartment. As such, Scott (almost gleefully) informs them that Kara had shot the President.
  • Loophole Abuse: At the end of the scene, Paulo decides to roll to see if the President survived being shot in the face, causing Kara to immediately declare she was using her Luck. When Paulo tries to point out she can't at this point, it is revealed she looked up the rule definition to justify using it at this point:note
Paulo: And that's it for Iron Man 3, we're gonna roll to see if the President survived-
    Kara: I'm using my Luck!
Paulo: No, it's not your roll. You failed-
Kara: (cutting Paulo off; borderline manic) A-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! HO HO HO! WOULDN'T YOU LIKE TO KNOW THE RULES OF GURPS, my friend?!
  • Oh, Crap!: "Oh my God, we just killed the President!"
  • Remembered Too Late: "TIM JUST POINTED OUT I HAVE LUCK!"
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Rather than stick around for the court martial proceedings, Rhodey decided to take the Iron Patriot armor to a far-off island.
  • We Need a Distraction: Tony calls in his platoon of remote-controlled suits of armor to get the attention of Killian and his goons.
  • Wham Line: As Rhodey is being shot at by the bad guys as he approaches the President, Kara decides in a knee-jerk fashion to shoot back. She’s told to roll for shooting minus 6 (as she's far away). She crit fails.
