Recap / Family Guy S19E12 "And Then There's Fraud"

Go To

Peter and Chris start a fake memorabilia business, but soon wrestle with guilt when Quagmire buys something from them. Elsewhere, Stewie gets botched plastic surgery.

Tropes:

  • Childhood Friend Romance: Oddly enough, Stewie's subplot ends with him as an adult looking back on his horrifying picture fondly...alongside his boyfriend/husband Tyler, who apparently knew him when they were in school.
Tyler: We've come a long way.
Stewie: We've come a LOT of ways.
  • Facial Horror: Stewie undergoes plastic surgery over the course of the episode, grotesquely distorting his face, before having it undone in the third act. The climax of the episode involves him ignoring Dr. Hartman's advice for rest afterwards and going in for picture day anyway, where his face literally peels off as his picture is taken.
  • Karma Houdini: Peter and Chris realize at the end that they faced no real consequences from their scam, and are still doing it at the end of the episode.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: After the Cutaway Gag where the entirety of the Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show plays, Peter and Quagmire look like they've both aged about 50 years. This is a jab at how long the gag must have felt to viewers.
  • Last-Second Photo Failure: Stewie gets plastic surgery after a family outing has the ticket man assuming he was a three-year-old. After it eventually renders him blind, he gets a reversal surgery to undo all of his work and poses for his photo day at school with his old, original face...until the last second where his face splits in two as he horrifyingly glares at it and that shot made it into the yearbook.
  • Noodle Incident: A week before the beginning of the episode, Meg did something that apparently requires someone to watch her all day and she legally can't be alone. It's revealed at the end that she had to wear an ankle bracelet (which she cut off, along with her lower leg), but it's still not explained why she had to wear it.
  • Overly Long Gag: Peter mentions The Hudson Brothers, which then leads to a "short clip" of the entire intro for The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show, which goes on for almost three minutes. It's briefly played again towards the end of the episode but gets cut off.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode title is a reference to the theme song "And Then There's Maude", from Maude. Interestingly, the entire theme song of the show was heard in an earlier episode and Peter got annoyed with it.
  • Riddle for the Ages: What did Meg do a week prior that required her to wear an ankle monitor?
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Averted; a cutaway gag involving flies has the female flies appear identical to the male flies, but a caption lampshades the punchline that they can tell the difference even though we the viewers can't.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The ticket man who assumed Stewie was older than he really was, causing him to get plastic surgery that falls apart at the last second on Picture Day.
