Recap / Fairy May Cry, 28 "An Unexpected Betrayal"

Go To

Thanks to Natsu Dragion and Eva, Earthland's Fairy Tail finally makes it to the Royal Capital. But before they can get far, they are confronted by Nelo Angelo and Erza Knightwalker, thanks to the actions of a shocking individual.

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Edolas Eva delivers one to Wendy while calling her cute and remarking she could pass as her Edolas counterparts little sister.
  • Alternate Self:
  • Beware the Silly Ones: The usually flippant Dante is pissed at Faust for kidnapping his friends and making Edolas into a Crapsack World, barely restraining himself from shooting him then and there.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Natsu, Lucy, Wendy, and Happy's reaction to Lisanna revealing that Edolas Eva is Lucy's aunt.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Natsu compares the parade in the royal capital to the Fantasia Parade from the Battle of Fairy Tail arc.
    • When Dante tries to interrogate Carla, Lucy brings up how he kept secrets during the Vergil arc.
  • Crossover Relatives: The chapter gives the first indication that Dante and Lucy are cousins, the group learning that Edolas Eva is Lucy Ashley's aunt.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: When the group needs a light source in a tunnel Natsu raises his fist to provide... having forgotten he can't use magic.
  • Dead Alternate Counterpart: Inverted by Edolas Eva, who survives to present day where Dante's mother was killed by demons.
  • Death Glare: Dante gives a nasty one to Carla when it looks like she betrayed the group at the end of the chapter.
  • Didn't See That Coming: The reveal that Dante and Lucy might be cousins catches everyone In-Universe (and many a reader) completely off guard.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Lisanna proudly presents torches she made for the group to use when travelling the hidden tunnel... but balks when Dante asks how she planned to light them.
  • Downer Ending: Fairy Tail is captured by the royal guards, seemingly thanks to the betrayal of Carla and Happy, whom Erza Knightwalker and Nelo Angelo address as Exceeds.
  • The Dreaded: Downplayed compared to other examples, but seeing King Faust is enough to make Lisanna shiver in fear.
  • Forced to Watch: A less extreme, but just as unpleasant example. Fairy Tail are forced to let Faust give his speech on using the magic power provided by the Lacrima (made out of their friends) in public, lacking the firepower needed to directly attack him.
  • Hate at First Sight: If recounts of his awful deeds didn't do it already, the Earthland Fairy Tail members first time seeing him in person has him giving a speech about using the Lacrima (the crystallized form of their friends) to provide his city with magical power.
  • Hope Is Scary: Dante vetoes exploring the possibility that he and Lucy may be cousins, clearly feeling this way.
  • Human Resources: Unknown to the people of Edolas, the giant Lacrima is actually made of living people, including the citizens of Magnolia and Fairy Tail.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: Among the rebuttals to Dante pressing Carla for her secrets has Lucy point out he kept a few during the Vergil arc. However, Dante himself revealed information about Vergil as soon as it became relevant, while Carla continues to withhold her secrets even when it proves detrimental to them.
  • Idiot Hero: Natsu once again has to be reminded that they can't use their magic in Edolas.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Dante expresses his suspicions of Carla conveniently gaining the information needed for them to infiltrate the castle, and tries to press her one what else she is hiding. He does so at an inopportune moment and is quite harsh in the process, but he's right that her habit of holding so much information close to her chest is not only suspicious, but hinders their efforts. The fact that she leads them into an ambush validates him on this.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: While Dante, Natsu, and Modeus were willing to face down Nelo Angelo and Erza Knightwalker, they surrendered when the demon points out he has several of their companions as hostages.
  • Master Swordsman: Dante proves capable of clearing the barrier blocking the tunnel with nothing but physical strength and a sword technique Modeus identifies as Gatotsu, one learned by his father.
  • Ms. Exposition: Lisanna is the one to tell Fairy Tail about King Faust and his reputation.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The normally cool, collected, and chatty Dante is unusually quiet and sports a somber expression when talking to or about his deceased mother's Edolas counterpart.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Lisanna remains with the group on their way to the royal city and informs them about King Faust's reputation.
    • Lucy holds back Dante from shooting King Faust during his speech, while Lisanna stops Natsu from charging head on.
    • Lisanna is the one to make the torches instead of Lucy, while Dante is the one to both light them and clear the barrier blocking their way instead of Taurus.
    • Happy gives Natsu the idea to try and eat fire to restore his magic. Dante stops him by pointing out if that could work Wendy would have regained hers as soon as she ate the air.
  • Pretender Diss: Dante outright calls Erza Knightwalker a cheap copy of Erza.
  • Properly Paranoid: Dante's suspicion about Carla's convenient information proves founded when the group ends up caught in an ambush.
  • Ship Tease: Natsu complimenting Lisanna on her resourcefulness has her blushing in response.
  • Split-Personality Switch Trigger: Lampshaded by Edolas Eva, who says that behind the wheel Natsu Dragion is as cocky as they come, but outside a vehicle he is a complete pushover.
  • Spotting the Thread: Dante picks up on the inconsistency of Carla receiving new information right when they need it, while fellow Exceed Happy does not. He quickly deduces she remembers much more than she's telling.
  • Unknown Relative: Edolas Eva and Lucy Ashley's relation indicates that Dante and Lucy may have been cousins this entire time.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: King Faust, thanks to making sure the royal capital doesn't suffer the effects of magical shortage, and using deception to paint any potential detractors in a negative light.
  • Wham Line:
    • In-Universe, Dante telling the others that Eva is the Edolas counterpart of his dead mother.
    • Lisanna revealing to the others that Edolas Eva is Lucy Ashley's aunt, suggesting he and Lucy are cousins.
    • Erza Knightwalker and Nelo Angelo referring to Carla and Happy as Exceeds, confirming they were such beings the whole time.
