Recap / F Is For Family S 5 E 7 A Very Merry Fucking Christmas

Go To

In order to secure a Christmas bonus, Frank comes up with an idea to boost Alahican's slumping sales - having a daredevil jump over an Alahican airliner. Meanwhile, Rosie is running out of time as Mayor Tangenti begins the demolition of his neighborhood.

Tropes:

  • Big "WHAT?!": This is the reaction of the neighbors at Frank's house when Goomer and Evelyn rekindle their romance and call each other by their real names, Walter Bartnett and Mary Margaret, after Goomer sings a surprisingly good rendition of a Christmas hymn.
  • Continuity Nod: The end of the Thanksgiving episode had Frank gleefully telling Megan that they would never see Sue's parents again because of her lie to attempt to get her parents and her brother Louis to reconcile. Louis is present at the Murphys' Christmas party, as are Frank's mother and sister, but Stan and Marilyn are nowhere to be seen.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Alahican's ad campaign, intended to reassure Mohican and Alaquippa customers that the merger will improve service, inexplicably invokes a number of air disaster tropes. Needless to say, Alahican's sales have plummeted, leaving the company too strapped for cash to pay out Christmas bonuses.
Ed: In retrospect, giving Mr. Stanley Kubrick full creative control was a mistake.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Nguyen-Nguyen is very calm and happy when describing the horrible things she'd do to the troublemakers if they ever ended up in prison with her.
Nguyen-Nguyen: You mess with Nguyen-Nguyen, you're dead. Don't believe me? Ask husband. Oh that's right, you can't. I killed him.
    [one boy reacts fearfully]
Nguyen-Nguyen: Ah. You make a pee-pee your pants big man? Wait 'til I make you act out Kojak with me. "The Strange Case of the Disappearing Lollipop." [points at the boys] It go in your ass.
  • Enemy Mine: Rosie is not thrilled that he has to have help from Bob Pogo and Jim Jeffords, who both display overtly racist tendencies, but he is desperate for help, and both Pogo and Jeffords have their own reasons for wanting to take down Tangenti and Gagliardi.
  • Hidden Depths: Kevin's music turns out to be pretty popular with the babies at Sue's parenting classes. Alice sees him through the window of Louis's dojo where the class is being held and decides to forgive Kevin.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Bill is so distressed over the profiling incident he witnessed with Rosie that he throws away his police cap and drinks a beer to drown his sorrows.
  • Person as Verb: Sue describes Ginny hitting on her brother as Louis being "Throater-ed".
  • Profiling: Bill becomes disillusioned with being a junior police officer after he witnesses Officer Glanney pulling Rosie over and harassing him, all while Rosie's terrified daughter, Nia, watches.
  • Scare 'Em Straight: The cops bring several troublemakers to prison to show them what might happen if they don't turn things around. One of the prisoners is Nguyen-Nguyen, who happily describes what she'd do to them if they ever ended up in prison with her.
  • Sorry, I'm Gay: Ginny hits on Louis during the Murphys' Christmas party.
Ginny: Is there a Mrs. Karate instructor?
    Louis: I'm gay.
    Ginny: Awww. Even on Christmas?
    Louis: Especially on Christmas.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Rosie reacts this way when he realizes that he's going to have to work with not only Bob Pogo, but also Jim Jeffords.
