The Murphys kick off summer with a trip to the town Memorial Day parade, where bottled-up frustrations and fears about the new baby boil over.
Tropes:
- Big "SHUT UP!": Frank says this to Kevin when the latter reminds Mom of how her salad tosser idea got stolen.
- Failed Attempt at Drama: Ben Schrider, the sports store owner from season 2, tries to intimidate Bill (who he still thinks is Jimmy Fitzsimmons) with his new prosthetic leg...one that was made for a negro.
- Groin Attack: To get one of the stopped elephants in his parade float to move, Philip the roustabout whacks him in the testicles. This causes the elephant to rear in pain and kick him, sending into a glass panel and injure himself.
- Also, while Kevin is leaving his father, he topples over a fire hydrant, knocking himself out with his crotch taking the impact.
- Hypocritical Humor: Kevin points out how the walllpaper shown in the home movies is the same unfinished wallpaper in the house, Frank finds it funny, and the rest of the family laughs. Except Sue, who starts crying upon realization, to which Frank angrily tells Kevin that wasn't funny.
- Also, when Sue is complaining to an officer who's trying to fine her for littering, he replies that he has to uphold the law. Meanwhile, Janet the prostitute is going around the place offering suck jobs.
- Misplaced Retribution: When Sue hands out flyers for her new invention, most of the recipients of these flyers crumple them up and throw them onto the ground in disinterest. A police officer notices this and decides to fine her for littering.
