Recap / Everybody Hates Chris S 3 E 2 Everybody Hates Caruso

Go To

  • Anger Born of Worry: Once Rochelle catches Julius working, she is disappointed, but only because he already works his ass off and has many health issues thanks to both it and stress.
  • Crapsack World: Of the Teenage Wasteland sort. After Caruso is humiliated by Yao, most of the school plunges into chaos as students compete for the throne. The bullying towards Chris and Greg increase about ten-fold.
  • The Dreaded: Bernard Yao, unwillingly. He only meant to get back at Caruso for bullying him, and yet Chris and Greg assume he wanted to take over as the new alpha bully.
  • From Bad to Worse: Yao beats up Caruso and makes him cower in fear. This must mean that there will be no one left to bully Chris and Greg, right? Wrong. Chris and Greg at first believe Yao to be taking over, but he isn't. However, everyone else at school is now competing to be the new alpha bully, which causes an all-out war and creates significantly more bullies to pick on the duo.
  • Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: Chris tries talking some sense into Caruso, who at this point is an empty shell of the man he used to be. It actually encourages him to reclaim his throne.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Caruso finally gets his just desserts for bullying the alumni of Corleone, particularly Chris and Greg.
  • Last-Name Basis: Bernard Yao. It's mostly because "Yao" is just shorter, but it helps emphasize his status as the guy who finally set Caruso straight.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After Caruso gets beaten up, Chris assumes that Caruso will take out his frustration on Chris as he usually does. What does Caruso do? Meekly ask Chris for a carton milk, request him and Greg refer to him as "Joey", and fearfully avoids Yao. He spends most of the episode in this pathetic state, to the point where Chris and Greg actually feel bad.
  • Status Quo Is God: Caruso beats Yao in the rematch, and reclaims his spot on the bully hierarchy.
  • Stereotype Flip: Both Chris and Yao defy common stereotypes about black and Asian people, leading to this hilarious exchange.
Chris: Wait, you're not good at math?
Yao: What, because I'm Asian, I have to be good at math? You're black, can you moonwalk?
Chris: I didn't mean it like that, and no, I can't moonwalk.
Yao: So, I can't use chopsticks.
    Chris: I don't like watermelon.
Yao: I can't make a swan out of paper.
Chris: I don't have sickle cell anemia.
    Yao: I don't own a dry cleaners.
  • Workaholic: Julius, as usual. He's put on paid vacation, but he feels so uncomfortable not working (and also missing out on extra money to put on bills) that he takes up extra work behind his family's backs.
