Recap / Elena Of Avalor S 2 E 24 Naomi Knows Best

Go To

When Elena, Esteban, and Mateo fall for a trap and are captured, it's up to Naomi to rescue her friends from captors' clutches.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • An Aesop: Trust your gut instincts if you feel something is wrong.
  • Berserk Button: Naomi and Skylar distract Victor by taunting him over being called weak and second-rate in comparison to his wife and daughter after Ash called him that earlier.
  • Character Development:
    • Esteban apologizes to Elena for doubting her leadership skills and tells her that she will be a great ruler one day.
    • Esteban also dismisses Naomi's concerns over Joaquin's strange behavior, as she is not educated in matters of state and affairs to understand why he may be doing this, like how he dismissed her intellect in "Finders Leapers" because she was a commoner. Unlike last time, he means it more in a teasing manner (albeit still hurtful) over not knowing rather than completely believing that he's superior to her.
    • Villainous example: Carla is considered a more powerful malvago than Victor by Ash, when she was normally just following her father's orders before they bacame malvagos. She also manages to demonstrate her confidence multiple times, and manages to escape the heroes alongside her mother.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The Jewel of Night. Ash can use it in a magic spell to absorb Elena's magic, but Mateo destroys it before she can finish.
  • Irony: After all the times Victor made Esteban "El Segundo" (including this episode), now he knows what it feels like.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Ash decides they cannot rescue Victor until they get new tamboritas because theirs got confiscated.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Gabe attempts to confront the Delgados head on. He's easily captured. Justified, as Gabe has been spending the last few months trying to catch them and he's gotten frustrated and impatient after coming up with no results until now.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Naomi suspects that there's something up about Joaquin when he doesn't write "To my dear friend Elena, [...]" and ends the letter with his titles, both being unusual given his past letters to Elena. As it turns out, Ash used a spell to mind control Joaquin into writing this letter.
  • Running Gag: Mateo failing at the rope-throwing skill that Naomi was trying to teach him.
  • The Sociopath: Ash is established as this: she cares about no one other than herself and Carla and is willing to commit murder to get what she wants.
  • Spotting the Thread: Naomi suspects that there's something fishy about Joaquin capturing Victor and Carla because it would have been more practical if he had sent them back to Elena as opposed to asking Elena to come over to retrieve them, as well as Joaquin not addressing Elena normally in his letter. Elena and Esteban assume that he just wanted to be formal for such a significant event. Naomi turns out to be right.
  • Wham Episode: The orb of the Scepter of Night is destroyed, Victor and Carla lose their tamboritas, and the former is arrested while the latter escapes with Ash.
