Recap / Ed Edd N Eddy S 5 E 3 Boom Boom Out Goes The Ed

Go To

During an otherwise normal evening in the Cul-De-Sac, a random blackout interupts the Eds homework study circle (where Double-D is the only one doing any studying), as well as Rolf's viewing of the annual "Miss Arduous Field Worker Pageant" broadcast from his home country. While Rolf enlists Kevin into jumpstarting the power with a generator, Ed's overactive imagination causes him to convince the other kids that an invasion of "mole mutants" are responsible for the blackout. With Eddy busy profiting from the ensuing panic, Double-D overcomes his fear of germs to head into the sewers to find the real source of the outage.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Agent Scully: Double D is so determined to prove the blackout has a logical explanation that he temporarily overcomes his fear of germs to go down into the sewers.
  • Butt-Monkey: Kevin, of all people, gets made into one by Rolf. He doesn't act like his usual Jerk Jock self and doesn't call the Eds "dorks" nor does he speak to them.
  • Contrived Coincidence: The power comes back on right after Ed rallies the other kids to defeat the non-existant Mole Mutants by flushing all the neighborhoods toilets at the same time and causing a tidal wave in the sewers.
  • Hollywood Darkness: Almost completely averted when the lights first go out in Ed's room - that is, except for the color-inverted outlines of the Eds and the room that show us what's happening.
  • Homework Slave: The episode starts with Eddy reading a magazine and Ed watching TV while Double-D is slaving away doing everyone's homework, the former too lazy and the later too dumb to try. While Double-D does complain about this, pointing out that their "study circle" was supposed to involve all three putting work in, Eddy replies that if he and Ed helped, Double-D could kiss his precious grade-point average goodbye.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: Eddy's reaction to Ed stirring up a panic in the Cul-De-Sac about "Mole Mutants" is to find a way to profit by selling dubious anti-mole-mutant gear to the other kids.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Nazz apparently doesn't see a problem with running around outside in a nightshirt and her underwear.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite adapting to the situation and looking for a way to profit from it, Eddy is initially just as freaked out by the blackout as everyone else.
  • Only Sane Man: Double D is the only one who doesn't buy into the rather ludicrous "blackout = mole mutant" theory, and tries to explain the logical reasons behind the power outage. When he makes his thoughts known, only Eddy takes him seriously.
  • Pet the Dog: Rolf rescues Double D from the sewer.
  • Serious Business: Rolf apparently takes his "Miss Ardous Fieldworker" pageant very seriously.
  • Squee: Eddy spends most of the episode like this, since his scam to sell "mole mutant repellent" actually worked.
  • Team Rocket Wins: Eddy's scam to sell anti-mole-mutant trinkets actually worked. Of course, Ed screws it up at the very end by causing Eddy to lose possession of the money, but the latter's scheme still isn't revealed as the fraud that it was.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: After succeeding in his scam, Eddy loses his ill-earned money down the sewer due to Ed.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: According to Ed's comic book, Mole Mutants are vulnerable to stale hot dog buns, which Eddy promtly starts selling to the kids.
