Recap / Ed Edd N Eddy S 5 E 2 Every Which Way But Ed

Go To

Airdate: November 4th, 2005

Shortly after an experiment with static electricity that leads to Ed causing a massive power outage in the Cul-de-Sac, Eddy emerges with a jawbreaker. The other Eds are amazed, but Edd ponders how Eddy could have gotten it. Eddy explains by flashing back to earlier in the day, where he managed to scam it off Jonny by posing as Plank. However, during Eddy's flashback, Jonny realizes Plank is acting weird (though not weird enough for him to notice that Plank has been replaced by Eddy) and flashes back to when he first noticed Plank was acting weird. Then, in this flashback, Nazz also flashes back to the past.

From there on, the Eds realize they're literally lost in the other kids' flashbacks, so much that Eddy forgot what he was going to say. Ed tries to help them, but only winds up making things worse, in a Bizarro Episode that nearly tops "One + One = Ed" in sheer weirdness and fourth-wall breakage—if the episode even acknowledged the wall's existence in the first place.

"Every Which Way But Ed" contains examples of:

  • All Men Are Perverts: Kevin sees an upside to an overweight Nazz landing on him.
  • Capture and Replicate: The first part of Eddy's plan to get Jonny's jawbreaker was to dip himself in wood-colored paint and take Plank's place while Jonny was distracted.
  • Dunce Cap: Fresh out of detention, Eddy was wearing one while walking home.
  • Easy Amnesia: While in the flashback of how Double D met Ed and Eddy, Eddy has Ed hit Double D over the head to make him think he's actually in the past to scam a quarter of him like they did before.
  • Eaten Alive: The scam seen in the flashback involved Ed attempting to eat an entire TV. This time, Eddy get his shirt stuck on Ed's fork, causing Ed to eat Eddy along with the TV.
  • Flashback Within a Flashback: Within a flashback within a flashback within a flashback...
  • Formerly Fat: Nazz is revealed to be this. It's likely that by doing exercise videos as seen in "Quick Shot Ed" she was able to lose the excess weight.
  • From Bad to Worse: The memory of Sarah being stuffed in a locker. Not only was she pissed when she finally broke out, but it turns out she had boxing gloves.
  • Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow: A flashback reveals Kevin used to have long red hair: in the present, he's only got a few long strands and an otherwise very short cut on his head. That same flashback shows that Jonny also once had a full head of hair.
  • Hope Spot: To get out of reliving Sarah pummeling them for ruining Jimmy's teeth, Eddy remembers when she followed them to school. Ed points out they stuffed her in a locker, which made her rather mad at them.
  • Idiot Ball: The ice cream scam in one flashback was going well until the Eds decide to make the scoops looking bigger by sticking a bowling ball in one, resulting in Jimmy's teeth getting wrecked and invoking Sarah's wrath.
  • Lampshade Hanging: When we see Rolf's memory of his home country, the Eds pop up and openly question how the story got to this point.
  • Medium Awareness: The final act is the Eds realizing they're trapped in several layers of flashbacks and attempting to get back to the present.
  • Nested Story: Using flashbacks.
  • No Ending: The episode ends with the Eds still trapped in the series of flashbacks, an amnesiac Double D having run off and Eddy having been accidentally eaten by Ed, the former begging the latter to remember something to get them out.
  • No Fourth Wall: It not so much gets shattered, so much as its existence is outright denied. Here's a list of the flashbacks that happened in this episode:
    • 1.) Eddy starts explaining to his friends how he stole Jonny's jawbreaker while disguised as Plank, which leads to...
    • 2.) Jonny thinking that something's up with Plank, which stemmed from a time when they were messing around with Rolf's tractor. This leads to...
    • 3.) Kevin and Nazz remembering when Nazz used to be extremely overweight. And this leads to...
    • 4.) Rolf remembering his life back in his home country before he and his family moved to Peach Creek. This leads to...
    • 5.) The Eds going back to the day that a scam of Eddy's had ruined Jimmy's teeth, which resulted in him having to get his current retainer. This ends up leading to...
    • 6.) The time that Sarah followed her brother and his friends to school and they locked her in a school locker. And this ultimately leads to...
    • 7.) The Eds flashing back to the day that Double D first met Ed and Eddy.
  • Origins Episode:
    • As previously mentioned, the final flashback reveals how Double D met Ed and Eddy—as it turns out, Double D and his family moved to the cul-de-sac when the three Eds were just toddlers, and Double D had fallen for Eddy's scam at the time, which consisted of Ed swallowing an enormous TV-set. It's never explained how Ed and Eddy met, but it's confirmed that they've known each other longer than they've known Double D.
    • On a smaller scale, we get to know how Plank got his "head" chipped and why Jimmy has a retainer.
  • Static Electricity: Double D decides to teach Ed about static electricity. Ed goes overboard and builds up a charge so big he glows, overloads all electronics in the house and draws everything in the room towards him electromagnetically, Double D included. The end result is a massive discharge that blows up the house, creating a mushroom cloud, leaving Double D fried.
  • Stuffed into a Locker: The Eds attempted to get rid of Sarah by shoving her in a locker one time when she followed them to school. It didn't last.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: The Eds when they realize they flashed back to the day Jimmy's teeth were ruined, due to how Sarah reacted.
  • The Tooth Hurts: Jimmy mistakenly bites into a bowling pin made to look like a pastry, ruining his teeth forever.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: The whole episode is about a Nested Story of flashbacks.
