Recap / Duck Tales The Big Flub

Go To

Fenton shoots a series of test commercials, but mistakenly creates demand for a nonexistent product. In desperation, he uses a new bubble gum invented by Gyro, who has not had time to test for side effects.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Balloonacy/Balloon-Bursting Bird: The episode revolves around an invention called Flubble Gum, which is a bubblegum allowing bubble blowers to fly. When Fenton Crackshell is floating around in the air, Scrooge McDuck mounts an improbable rescue scheme. Scrooge throws lots of Flubble Gum into a trash compactor along with water, mixes it up, and uses an air pump to blow a giant-sized bubble, causing Fenton's new tri-level trailer to float into the sky. The rescue is successful, but a passing bird pecks at the bubble, bursting it and sending the trailer crashing to the ground, much to Mrs. Crackshell's dismay.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Flubble Gum lets you float alright, but chew too much and you won't be able to get back down.
  • Implementing the Incomplete: With angry customers demanding Pep, Fenton sells the Flubble Gum before Gyro had finished testing it.
  • Missing Steps Plan: Leave it to Fenton to have an advertising campaign without first having a product to advertise.
  • Mustache Vandalism: A Pep Gum billboard featuring Gandra is given a mustache, by Gandra herself. Because she's angry with being associated with the problems the gum caused, and blames Fenton for it.
Gandra: (to Fenton) The last time I helped you, I've became the most-hated television personality since J.R. Moon.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Fenton appeared on a talk show hosted by Oprah Webfeet.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Scrooge, when he sees everyone is floating.
    • Fenton's expression when he's shown on the news as the person responsible for the phenomenon.
    • Gizmoduck when accidentally made Scrooge spit out the pep gum which kept him and Mrs. Crackshell from falling.
  • Shout-Out: Fenton says "I'm a Pepper, too" when the Pep gum makes him float away, referencing an infamous jingle for Dr. Pepper.
    • This episode was later given a shout out in DuckTales Remastered when Gyro makes an oxygen-based gum to help himself, Scrooge, and Fenton breathe on the Moon.
  • Skewed Priorities: Scrooge chews some pep gum to save himself and Mrs. Crackshell from falling. He tries to speak to Gizmoduck with a mouthful, causing Gizmoduck to scold him for doing so.
Scrooge: (spits the gum out) Get me down from HEEEEEEEEEErrrrree...
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Being rich has made Fenton less-humble. Until things had gone horribly wrong.
  • Unfinished, Untested, Used Anyway: Fenton launches a successful ad campaign for a product called "Pep", but has neglected to actually make a product to sell. Going to Gyro Gearloose, he chooses a prototype gum that allows the chewer to float, despite Gyro's warnings that it's untested. Unfortunately, the gum works too well, and now all of Duckburg's citizens can't get back down.
  • What Could Possibly Go Wrong?: Fenton says this word-for-word when he ignores Gyro's warnings about the flubblegum being untested.
