Recap / Duck Tales S 1 E 50 Back To The Klondike

Go To

Scrooge takes the kids to the Klondike, where he met an old flame, Glittering Goldie.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Bears Are Bad News: Scrooge gets chased by a bear when he tries to go back to his claim. It turns out to be Goldie's pet and guard animal, Blackjack. Once Scrooge gets back on good terms with her, he's harmless.
  • Bowdlerise: The episode changes Goldie's kidnapping to Goldie willingly coming to work for Scrooge after he threatens to report her to the mountain police.
  • Loves Only Gold: In Scrooge's flashback, Goldie does a song and dance about how she loves gold rather than furs or precious stones like other girls. Naturally, this causes Scrooge to become attracted to her.
  • Meaningful Name: Of course the love of Scrooge's life would be named 'Goldie'.
  • Mythology Gag: The Tree Buchet incident happened to Donald in the original story.
  • Old Flame: Scrooge fell in love with Goldie while mining in the Klondike and still hasn't entirely gotten over her years later. As it turns out, she hasn't gotten over him either.
  • Poor Communication Kills: If Scrooge had only tried to find Goldie and confront her about her supposedly stealing the gold, Dangerous Dan's scheme would have fallen apart.
  • Romance-Inducing Smudge: At one point during a semi-romantic montage of the two of them as partners, Scrooge wipes off a stain Goldie got mining the claim.
  • Scare the Dog: During Scrooge's opening flashback, a wolf sneaks up on his younger self while he's checking his secret hiding spot. He growls back at the wolf and sends it running off whimpering.
  • Sexy Shirt Switch: When she first leaves for Scrooge's claim, Goldie is wearing her dress. In every subsequent scene of the two living together, she's wearing one of Scrooge's shirts.
  • Tree Buchet: Scrooge climbs a tree trying to get away from Goldie's pet bear and ends up climbing to the top when the bear tries to climb up after him. Unfortunately, the tree is thin enough that it bends almost to the ground under his weight and he eventually gets sling-shotted into a nearby lake.
  • Valentine's Day Episode: The episode takes place close to Valentine's Day (early on, Scrooge walks in on the kids and Mrs. Beakley decorating) and focuses heavily on Scrooge and Goldie's romance.
  • Valentine's Day Vitriol: Scrooge has nothing but contempt for the holiday and just considers it a waste of both time and postage stamps.
