Recap / DuckTales S1E49 "The Money Vanishes"

Go To

The Beagle Boys break out of jail with their Ma's help and run into Gyro, who's testing out his new invention: a teleporter. Just spray something with a special chemical, then hit it with a ray from the matching gun and send it wherever you choose. Smelling an opportunity, the Beagle Boys trick Gyro into leaving and steal both spray and gun. Then they make fake commercials so Scrooge thinks money eating moths are on the loose in Duckburg and the only cure is the spray, which they present as bug repellent. Sure enough, Scrooge falls for it and soon the Beagle Boys have made every cent in his money bin vanish. But Huey, Dewey and Louie were suspicious of the phony commercial and even phonier salesman from the start and use the spray to teleport themselves to the Beagles' hideout where they've stashed the money. Then it's a chase through the city as the Beagle Boys try to make the nephews vanish with the teleporter and the nephews try to take it from them. Eventually, Huey, Dewey and Louie are victorious and not only get Scrooge's money back, but use the teleporter to put the Beagle Boys right back where they belong too: in jail.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • 555: The phone number in the Beagle Boys' phony commercial is 555-5555.
  • Brick Joke: Gyro shows up again jogging near the end of the episode. He even wins the race he was in!
  • Epic Fail: While trying to dig out of prison, the Beagle Boys at one point manage to tunnel back into their own cell.
Bouncer: (Sheepishly) Well, they'll never think to look for us here.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: The Beagle Boys discuss how happy their stolen fortune will make Ma Beagle and how they can bail the whole family out of jail for Christmas.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Somehow Officer Parolski fails to notice the cake from Ma Beagle has a full-sized shovel sticking out of it.
  • Here We Go Again!: Scrooge imagines this will happen when Gyro says he's going to scrap his teleporter... and build a flotation ray instead.
  • Heroic BSoD: Scrooge after the Beagle Boys successfully empty his money bin.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Little Helper realizes the threat the Beagle Boys pose long before Gyro. They Bound and Gagged him before he could do anything.
  • Imagine Spot: Scrooge has one at the very end of the episode after his money is back in its rightful place and Gyro has his teleport ray back: Gyro says that he is going to invent a flotation ray next, leading to Scrooge thinking about his money floating right out of the money bin as he fruitlessly tries to prevent the citizens of Duckburg from helping themselves to the free money floating around the city.
  • Induced Hypochondria: The Beagle Boys steal Gyro's latest invention by convincing him he has Inventoritis from being too sedentary, and needs to start jogging... right this instant. He jogs away and they have the run of the laboratory.
  • Jail Bake: How the Beagle Boys escape, as usual.
  • Nobody Here but Us Statues: When the triplets get a hold of the furniture mover ray, the Beagle Boys try to hide from them by pretending to be mannequins in a store window. The boys don't fall for it.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The Beagle Boys, Duckburg's most notorious criminals, show up at Gyro's door dressed as doctors but don't bother to remove their masks or placards. Still works on Gyro though. The same trick also works on Scrooge when they pull their fake "money moths" TV ad and Bigtime sells him the spray in disguise as a salesman. Though the nephews don't seem to recognize him, they do find it suspiciously convenient that the salesman shows up at the door to give Scrooge the spray mere moments after the TV ad.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Surprise Jump: After shaking in fear from watching a monster movie (while denying to each other that they aren't afraid), the nephews suddenly jump up and spilling their popcorn when Scrooge screamed upon seeing a bug (Burger Beagle in costume) eating a dollar bill on the fake TV ad.
  • Teleport Gun: Gyro's invention du jour functionally. The object to be moved needs to be sprayed with a chemical first, though.
  • Tempting Fate: Scrooge boasts nothing on TV could scare an old adventurer like him. A moment later, he sees the Beagle Boy's fake commercial featuring money-devouring bugs.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Bigtime intends to make the nephews disappear permanently.
