Recap / Drake And Josh Episode 21 Honor Council

Go To

Drake gets accused of parking his teacher's car in the classroom and is suspended. Josh offers to appeal his case to a jury of his peers, but it is put up against Mindy Crenshaw, his rival and the smartest girl in school.

Episode Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Even Josh can't help but laugh at Mrs. Hayfer's Freak Out when she sees the car in her classroom.
  • Always Second Best: Josh feels this way toward Mindy.
  • Amusing Injuries: Josh challenges Mindy to a thumb war. She not only effortlessly beats him but also hurts his thumb to the point where he's still complaining about it at the end of the scene.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Josh lists off the times she's beat him out aside from the science fair: getting a 100% on a test while he gets a 99%, beating him by one vote in the school election, and bringing ham to lunch when he brought tuna.
  • Awful Wedded Life: The only reason Josh won the case is the principal was willing to give Josh extra time since it would keep him away from his wife.
  • Confirmation Bias: Mrs. Hayfer makes it clear from the beginning that she believes Drake is responsible for putting her car in the classroom, outright accusing him in front of everyone. All it takes is the mechanic finding the jacket in the trunk to get Drake suspended.
  • Cool, but Inefficient: Josh spends the whole night working hard learning legal jargon to impress the jury. Since this is merely a student trial to revoke Drake's suspension and has no legal standing, this only serves to bore the jury with his rambling monologue to the point that the principal (serving as judge) has to resort to an airhorn to get Josh to shut up.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Drake is nonchalant about being suspended, albeit annoyed at being falsely accused. Once his parents tell him that suspension will prevent him from attending extracurriculars that he does care about down the line, he changes his tune.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Mindy parked the car in Mrs. Hayfer's class in retaliation for messing up her 4.0 GPA with one B.
  • Easily Condemned: Everyone is quick to believe Drake put Mrs. Hayfer's car in the classroom when his jacket is found in the trunk, despite the fact he had reported it stolen beforehand and no one can actually explain how he would be able to get the car inside the school. Megan is the only one who realizes that Drake isn't smart enough to do something so complicated.
  • Enemy Mine: Mindy Crenshaw. She's Josh's long time rival, represents Mrs Hayfer in the case against Drake for a crime which she is later revealed to have committed and framed him for, and... Megan doesn't like it when anyone bugs her brothers unless she's doing it. All three of them work together to bring her down.
  • Lame Comeback: Josh can only respond to Mindy calling Josh an idiot by saying, "Oh yeah?"
  • No Peripheral Vision: Drake and Josh are so entranced by their debate that they are Late to the Realization of Mrs. Hayfer's car being in the classroom.
  • Noodle Incident: Drake apparently accidentally drove the lawn mower into the living room, filled their swimming pool with lobsters to make money, and set off a stick bomb at Walter's sister's wedding, even though Walter hates her.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Walter's sister is so disliked by the family that Drake set off a stink bomb at her wedding. Drake defends his actions by pointing out Walter hates her too. Even Walter's reaction implies he can't stand her, just thinks that it didn't warrant Drake releasing a stink bomb at her wedding.
  • Pet the Dog: Megan has two:
    • She advertises Drake's music on her website and admits it's actually good.
    • She saves Drake from suspension by finding the real culprit.
  • Running Gag:
    • Various characters spend the whole episode wondering how the car got into the classroom. It's revealed at the end that Mindy took the car apart and put it back together in the classroom.
    • Mindy's cloned cockapoo.
  • Same Character, But Different: Addie Singer is a level-headed girl in Unfabulous who wishes harm on those who are mean to her, but would never go through with it, even if they deserved it. Here she pulls a deliberately mean prank on Josh who never hurt her by putting a cat on his face knowing that he's allergic to cats.
  • Shout-Out: Addie Singer appears as Megan's friend.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Josh wins one against his rival, Mindy Crenshaw, and scores a date with two pretty girls.
  • Too Clever by Half: Mindy stole Drake's jacket and planted it in the trunk to gave merit to Mrs. Hayfer's suspicion that Drake stole her car and have her suspend him for the prank. However, getting Drake suspended ends up getting Megan involved, which results in Megan discovering the obscure evidence needed to prove Mindy did it. Had Mindy just pulled the prank without setting up Drake as the fall person, it's likely she never would've been caught.
  • Tough Love: Drake bluntly tells Josh to get over losing to Mindy in the science fair. In all fairness, cloning a dog is more impressive than a giant magnet.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Subverted with Mrs. Hayfer. She acts composed, albeit visibly mortified that her car is in her classroom, only to react exactly as you'd expect when telling the janitor what happened. Played straight with the AAAA mechanic, who casually responds to the call as if it happens all the time and asks if he has the right car.
  • Varying Competency Alibi: Everyone bar Josh, and even then he's briefly convinced, thinks Drake put Mrs. Hayfer's car in the classroom. While Drake is Brilliant, but Lazy, his inability to figure out how such a thing could be pulled off is enough to convince Megan that whoever did this had to be smarter.
  • Villain Has a Point: You can't exactly blame Mindy for calling Josh an idiot for thinking a person could fit an entire car through a window, even with lubricant, without at least removing the frame first.
