Recap / Dragons: Riders of Berk S3 E7 "Reign of Fireworms"

Go To

While preparing for a Fireworm invasion, the twins discover a stone with their name on it. Gobber authenticates it as a claim by Magnus Thorston, the twins' ancestor, that gives Ruff and Tuff ownership of the island.

Tropes:

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Downplayed, but the power of ruling an island really goes to the twins' heads.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Astrid laughs when Hiccup is assigned to be "stableboy", given he was just enjoying her being assigned to clear brush.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: When they realize that the Fireworms are going to destroy what they built and Hiccup is the only one who knows how to handle this, they beg Hiccup and the others to come out of jail. Hiccup plays up the need for "rules" to be enforced, until the twins rescind their claim of the island.
  • Big Damn Heroes: After being missing for most of the episode, the Night Terrors show up while swarming in the shape of the Fireworm Queen, and draw the Fireworms away from the island.
  • Break the Haughty: Played for Laughs when Tuffnut assigns Hiccup to be the "stableboy," that is one who has to wait on all the dragons.
  • Cardboard Prison: The dragon riders can break out of the pens, given that Ruffnut and Tuffnut had them locked up with their dragons and that the bars are so far apart that a human could easily just crawl through them; the only reason they stay is because the twins technically own the island and Hiccup wants them to learn about The Chains of Commanding. They only try and break out when the Fireworms invade, but Tuffnut then begs them to come out and handle the Fireworms.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Hiccup hopes that by letting Ruff and Tuff be the boss that they realize how hard a job it is.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Hiccup invokes this when he tries to point out to Ruffnut and Tuffnut that by imprisoning everyone, there's no-one to defend the island from the Fireworms. They lock him up for breaking a rule as he's warning them, but in time his prediction comes true.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Refuse to pay your landing/taking off tax? Your going to the dungeon. Disrespect the Sergeant-at-Arms? Going to the dungeon. Flying at equal speed with Barf and Belch? Dungeon. Write a sub-par poem in Tuffnut's honor that fails to impress his pet chicken? Dungeon.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Don't try and understand the twins' rules, especially their elimination of the letter "s".
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Hiccup teases Astrid about ending up in the twins' dungeon, then gets sent there barely an hour later. Upon seeing him, Astrid takes the opportunity to parrot his earlier comment back at him.
    • The very first thing that burns is the twins' nameplate for their new outpost, "Thorstonton" after they ignored Hiccup's warnings to prepare for the Fireworms.
  • No Sympathy: After Gobber verifies the twins' claim to the island:
Hiccup: No, Dad, Dad, Dad, you can't be serious. You're not leaving me with this? (twins singing & dancing victoriously)
Stoick: Yes, I am. Welcome to my world. Only now, it's your world.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Subverted. Hiccup is about to break out of prison with the other riders when the Fireworms invade, but Ruffnut and Tuffnut appear and beg for them to come out.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Hiccup insists that the twins' new rules and assignments aren't that bad, then immediately gets assigned the worst job of all — stableboy.
    • Snotlout, of all people, somehow manages to induce an inversion. When the twins start assigning roles he's fully prepared to get an awful job but ends up being assigned the best one instead — sergeant-at-arms.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: After the twins take over and make life ridiculous at Dragon's Edge.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: At the end, the twins at least have the claim stone to remind them of the time they ruled the island. Then Meatlug eats it and barfs it out as lava.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: The other dragon riders sans Hiccup all shout Big NOs when Gobber authenticates the twins' ownership of the island.
