Recap / Dragons: Riders of Berk S3 E6 "Gone Gustav Gone"

Go To

Dagur has salvaged all the anti-dragon gear from the Reaper, meanwhile, the riders have bigger problems as Gustav is back and hoping to make good on Hiccup's promise to make him a part of the team.

Tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Gustav could give Snotlout a run for his money with how much he hits on Astrid.
  • Call-Forward: Hiccup indirectly mentions his flightsuit when he is falling down the cave to get onto his dragon again.
  • Defiant to the End: Defied. When he's captured by the Berserkers, Gustav tells them his name and says that's all they're getting out of him. Then Dagur orders, "feed him to the eels" and Gustav spills everything he knows, and fast.
  • The Ditz: Fanghook makes Hookfang look like a genius. In particular, he seems convinced that the best way to put out a fire is to add more fire to it.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Gustav feels that after two years of shoveling dragon feces he has earned the right to become a full-fledged member of the riders.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Hiccup is not very happy when Gustav appears to side with Dagur and the Berserkers. Ultimately subverted, as Gustav was just pretending.
  • Guile Hero: Gustav proves to actually be a pretty good manipulator.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: Gustav's mother, who once sold him into slavery, is said to only care if he is gone more than three days.
  • Idiot Ball: When Dagur drops the Dragon Eye down a crevice, Gustav immediately jumps in after it, forcing Hiccup and Toothless to dive after him. Somewhat justified by the fact that the Dragon Eye would very likely have been destroyed if it had hit the bottom.
  • Imagine Spot: Gustav daydreams about Astrid finding him attractive; in reality she finds him really creepy.
  • Ironic Echo: When Dagur finds out that Gustav tricked him, Hiccup shoots Dagur's words from earlier in the episode right back at him.
  • Plot Coupon: It turns out that some of the maps on the Dragon Eye lead to places where additional lenses with different maps for the Dragon Eye can be found.
  • Precocious Crush: Gustav has a crush on Astrid and Fanghook has a crush on her dragon, Stormfly.
  • Slasher Smile: Dagur sports one when he realizes that Gustav and Hiccup tricked him.
  • Skyward Scream: "BOAR PIIIIIT!"
  • Tag Along Kid: What Gustav is hoping to be.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Gustav refuses to go home until he's promoted, so the riders end up having to take turns supervising him.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: No one mentions that the last time they saw Fanghook, Gustav had returned him to the wild.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The tail fin was still on fire last we saw it.
