Recap / Dragon Ball Z Abridged E 9

Go To

Original Airdate: February 27, 2009

As Nappa continues his rampage, the remaining Z-Fighters desperately try to hold out until Goku arrives. When he finally arrives, Piccolo has been killed... which means the Saiyans can't use the Dragon Balls as the Namekian's death means the Balls become useless. Vegeta kills Nappa for this, on top of every other stupid thing he does.

It's his tropes, Vegeta. I have to wait for these:

  • Adaptational Context Change: In canon, Vegeta killed Nappa because the injuries Goku gave him meant that he was no longer able to fight. Here, it's because him ruining their chances for gaining immortality by killing Piccolo were the straw that broke the camel's back after years of constantly annoying Vegeta.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: When Krillin first uses his Destructo Disc, note  he admits that he could have done it earlier and the other warriors wouldn't have died.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Goku Vs. Nappa is more so in this version as Goku beats Nappa in 10 seconds. It's even hinted that he didn't even have to use the Kaio-Ken.
  • Dull Surprise: The famous "over 9,000" line is read by Vegeta this way after Nappa got his ass kicked by Goku.
Vegeta: I had the scouter upside-down. It's over 9,000. (crushes his scouter in his hand) Rah.
  • Exact Words: A meta Foreshadowing Brick Joke. Vegeta is well and truly fed up with Nappa's stupidity by this point, and early in the episode, he starts chanting "9 minutes, 18 seconds" to himself. It is at timecode 09:18 of the video when Vegeta kills Nappa. It would also be the "happiest moment of his life", and the episode ends with him just smiling after doing the deed.
  • Insult Backfire: Vegeta gets a nosebleed after Nappa says something particularly stupid.
    Nappa: You okay, Vegeta?
Vegeta: Yes, just... just an aneurysm out of sheer stupidity...
Nappa: Wow! Didn't think you were that stupid, Vegeta.
  • Medium Awareness: Vegeta uses the timestamp for his killing Nappa as a Madness Mantra.
  • Mismeasurement: Vegeta initially has his scouter upside-down and thinks Goku's power level is 1006. Cue Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Killing Piccolo, which in turn kills Kami, meant that Vegeta and Nappa can't use the now-inert Dragon Balls to wish for immortality. However, neither of them know about this until Goku mentions it.
  • Rage Breaking Point: In the original, Vegeta kills Nappa because he outlived his usefulness. Here, it's because of every other thing he did, the last straw being the reveal that Nappa just made the Dragon Balls worthless by killing Piccolo and, by extension, Kami, who created and is connected to them.
  • Read the Map Upside Down: When Vegeta scans Goku to find his power level, his scouter reads 1006. However, it turns out he's wearing the scouter upside-down. After Nappa is already beaten by Goku, he tells him it's over 9000.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Piccolo inwardly realizes that, instead of sacrificing himself, he could've grabbed Gohan and gotten out of the way of Nappa's blast instead. By that time, however, it was too late.
  • Torment by Annoyance: Nappa's repeated questioning of Vegeta? annoys Vegeta enough to drive him mad and blast him to death.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Piccolo's dying words involve briefly berating Gohan for not dodging.
  • You Have Failed Me: Like the original series, Vegeta kills Nappa after he falls to Goku. However, it's less for losing and more because Goku points out that with Piccolo dead, the Dragon Balls won't work. And Nappa killed him. It was the last straw after dealing with Nappa most of his life.

"Ohhh, and I totally killed that guy! Oh well, at least we still had fun getting here, right, Vegeta? Vegeta? Remember the bug planet? Vegeta? Vegeta? Vegeta? Vegeta? Vegeta? Vegeta? Veget—AAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!"
