Recap / Dr. Crafty Season 1 Month 4: Season 1 Commission Month

Go To

Airing Range: 8/24/17 - 9/14/17

This month's episodes are dedicated to Crafty's commissioned work, just so he can pay off whatever he needs to each week. As such, this month lacks a typical theme; whatever art appears in the episodes is entirely at the commissioners' mercy.

Tropes Applicable to the Month as a whole:

  • Breather Episode: Following the rather intense ending of "A Song of Ice and Fire," this month's episodes return to Dr. Crafty's usual lightheartedness—with the intentional absence of a typical monthly theme. The only thing unifying these episodes is that they're dedicated to Crafty's commissioned artwork. The actual subject matter of each episode is randomized based on what each commissioner wants. Every subsequent season receives a set of Commission Month episodes like this, allowing the show to briefly break from its narrative to explore a variety of topics it otherwise couldn't.

Main Show E13: "Original Characterror!"

Air Date: 8/24/17

Bills are piling up for Crafty and Nurse, so Crafty kicks off the month with a varied trifecta of original character commissions, with each based on different properties. The commissioners for this episode are saintwalker1806, thebarmybrit, and zirocoh.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Black Comedy: At the end of the episode, the entire lab is covered in Pokémon corpses. Crafty calls the episode a big success.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: In response to a Pokémon OC commission, Crafty creates a machine to churn out original characters who are just Pokémon with bits of clothing photoshopped on.
  • Loop Hole Abuse: One commission Crafty draws is of the commissioner's original Digimon design. He categorizes the commission as a Simplified Concoction (which would later become the Chibi Concoction category) rather than a Creature Concoction. Despite being a Digimon, the character has a very humanoid appearance. That quality and the design's overall appearance lends itself well to the lowest-priced option on Crafty's commission sheet.
  • Rule of Three: Crafty introduces his d20 dragon die and rolls it three times during the first art recording, using it to do away with anything that gets to him. It works the first two times, but not so much the third...
  • Take That, Audience!: Upon reaching a commissioner's Pokémon OC commission, Crafty rants about original characters who are simply Pokémon wearing clothing, like hats, shirts or even backpacks. He ends up developing a machine to churn out many of these characters before it ends up exploding from the overload.

Main Show E14: "The Monster, the Sniper and the CLOD!"

Air Date: 8/31/17

Three more commissions are up for this episode. This time, each one involves existing characters from various works: a Monster Hunter creature, Nova of Heroes of the Storm, and Peridot of Steven Universe. And each one of them come to visit, to the Crewmates' chagrin. The commissioners for this episode are poke-shapeshifter13, Titankilla, and VideoisVideoart.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Cutaway Gag: Before the art commentary begins, Nurse wonders aloud about the 'fan art' pieces from previous episodes that are taking up space. There's a cut after she asks her question, showing that the characters in those pieces had come to life. Among them is a now sentient Junkrat, who has a proposition:
Junkrat: Well, I guess we gotta eat someone...
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: While Crafty's art coming to life is a consistent part of his skillset, this episode implies that his art sometimes comes to life without his intent. Now saddled with a group of sentient art pieces and not knowing what to do with all of them, he crowds them into his storage, never to be seen again. He inadvertently sets up the Running Gag of the Junkrat he drew in "A Lovely Day for Meihem" becoming the castle's garbage disposal. Later episodes, particularly some of the Chara-Cafe episodes, don't imply this at all; they instead present Crafty's strange art ability as strictly voluntarily.
  • Lampshade Hanging: During the first segment of art production footage, Nurse picks up on how she and Crafty tend to invite other fictional characters onto their show just by talking about them, which is exactly what the three subjects of this episode do. When Nova, a skilled sniper, is being drawn, Crafty takes cover under a cardboard box, unwilling to contribute commentary while she'll inevitably be around to torment him.
Nurse: Doctor? Doctor?? Where are you? Aren't you going to say something stupid for a laugh?
Crafty: [arriving on-screen under a cardboard box, whispering.] Shhh! Quiet, Nurse! You'll give away my position!
    Nurse: What... are you doing?
Crafty: Hiding, of course! You said so yourself: whenever we draw a character, they show up and try to kill me! Last thing I want is a psychic sniper blasting my brains out!
Nurse: Come now, Doctor there's no way we can use that gag twice in one episode.
[From off-screen, Nova fires some warning shots.]
    Nurse: ... Oh crud, duck!!
    Crafty: Duck? Where?
[A curious Crafty removes his box covering and immediately gets shot, causing him to yelp and the Duck Hunt victory jingle to play. Then, an actual Duck Hunt duck appears, with Nova struggling to shoot it down as the Duck Hunt dog laughs at her expense. She eventually hits her target, though, and the dog proudly holds up her quarry.]

Main Show E15: "One piece, Two piece, Red piece, Blue piece"

Air Date: 9/7/17

Next up is a commission of Nico Robin of One Piece, complete with commentary regarding her home series. The commissioner for this episode is clockwerksoul.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Hurricane of Puns: Nico invites tons of hand-based puns from the Crafty Crew.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Crafty presents what he thinks is a Devil Fruit that he fished from the garbage. He eats it, but after briefly declaring himself a god, he suddenly hurries to the bathroom to vomit. Devil Fruit or not, he still dug it out of the trash, and it was clearly in no condition to be eaten.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Dr Crafty tries to eat a Devil Fruit that he found in the garbage. Despite going full evil for a few seconds, it ends up just being rotten food, forcing him to vomit off-screen.

Main Show E16: "This Episode... Has no weaknesses!"

Air Date: 9/14/17

On the last episode of the month, Crafty's boot polish vanishes right out of his hands; he immediately concludes that it's the work of an enemy stand. Thus, He and Nurse draw up a commissioned fan character to combat this sudden antagonist. The commissioner for this episode is Noerusan, now known as MikotoNui.
