Recap / Doug S 1 E 5 Doug Cant Dig It Doug Didnt Do It

Go To

Doug Can't Dig It: Doug is thrilled when Mrs. Wingo tells him that he'll be introducing a special performer for an upcoming school show. But when he finds out that the performer is actually his sister Judy, he worries that he'll be embarrassed in front of the entire school.

"Doug Can't Dig It" contains these tropes:

  • Title Drop: Downplayed; after Doug tries multiple times to get Judy to cancel her performance, she eventually asks “Doug, why can’t you dig it?”

Doug Didn't Do It: When Mr. Bone's Der Grosser Yodelmeister Trophy is stolen, the Vice Principal goes on the case to find it. But when Doug finds out it's in his locker, there is a puzzle: Could Doug really be the one who did it? He certainly doesn't remember doing anything of the sort...

"Doug Didn't Do It" contains these tropes:

  • An Aesop: Admit your mistakes by telling the truth instead of blaming others.
  • Accidental Public Confession: When Roger accidentally turns on the intercom, he blurts out to Doug that he was the one who stole the trophy and hid it in Doug's locker, and his Evil Gloating is broadcast for the whole school to hear. To his credit, Doug did try to warn him.
  • Brick Joke: Judy suggests Doug plead insanity in dealing with Mr. Bone. Doug shoots down the idea saying Skunky Beaumont tried that and now has to see the guidance counselor everyday. Later, Doug passes the guidance counselor's office and we hear a voice say, "Hey, Doug," and Doug replies, "Hey, Skunky."
  • Cassandra Truth: At first, Doug was going to return Mr. Bone's trophy while explaining that somebody had placed it in his locker. However, he changed his mind when he came to believe that Mr. Bone wouldn't believe his claims.
  • Clear My Name: Doug spends almost the entirety of the episode trying to prove his innocence.
  • Hidden Depths: Implied; one of the textbooks in Doug's locker suggests that he's taking Spanish class.
    • In addition, Mr. Bone is an expert yodeler.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Roger gloats that he wantonly stole Mr. Bone's trophy and sneaked it into Doug's locker, Mr. Bone, having found out via the intercom, makes the culprit shine all his trophy while listening to his yodel music.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Even though Doug returned his trophy, Mr. Bone still sees fit to punish him when he was under the assumption that Doug stole it.
  • Oh, Crap!: At the end of the episode, when Mr. Bone tells Roger he has one more trophy for him to polish, Roger thinks it'll be no sweat...until Bones pulls back a curtain to reveal it's huge.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Roger emits a hilariously high-pitched scream when he finishes gloating to Doug about stealing the trophy, then turns to see a furious Mr. Bone standing in the office door.
  • Something We Forgot: When Doug felt that Mr. Bone wouldn't believe his attempts to tell him he wasn't the one who stole the trophy, he just placed it outside Bone's office. Unfortunately, he forgot he had left it in his lunch bag, connecting him to the theft.
