Go To

After Bean denies the Elves their castle, she sends Elfo to spy on them. However, he gets caught and is forced to spy for the Elves on the Trogs, who likewise capture him and force him to spy on the humans. Meanwhile, Derek meets his half-brother Jasper.

Tropes

  • Alien Geometries: In Bean's nightmares, Dreamland castle is warped around so ceilings become floors and vice versa.
  • Ambiguous Syntax: As Rulo leaves the throne room, he knocks a casserole out of Odval's hands, and Odval tells Mop Girl to "clean this up". She asks if he means the casserole, or the entire political situation.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Trixie takes an attraction to "Schlomo", and says his hat reminds her of someone... only to reveal she means Superviso, much to Elfo's shock.
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: Elfo blows his cover because he tries to counter rude remarks the Elves make about him.
  • Call-Back: Elfo stumbles onto the cupboard of the Sacred Goo the same way he and Derek first found it back in "Love's Slimy Embrace", falling down the flight of stairs in the secret corridor in Derek's room. Also Elfo reminds Odval of the names he gave his eyes.
  • The Cameo: Many of Bean’s old enemies appear in her first nightmare, including Big Jo, the Archdruidess, and Skybert Gunderson.
  • Chekhov's Gag: The bad clams, which Zog initially raises as a cause for Bean's bad dreams, and which Luci chows down on later, saving him from Cloyd and Becky.
  • Continuity Nod: Much like his mother, Jasper assumes Bean is some kind of giant squirrel.
  • Distracted by My Own Sexy: Elfo momentarily stops to admire himself in his Trog-skin disguise, and specifically his "bum-bum".
  • Double Agent: Elfo unwillingly becomes a triple agent.
  • Enmity with an Object: Luci is, understandably, holding a grudge against the hellavator for chopping his head off.
  • Epic Fail: As Elfo even notes, he's a crap spy, getting caught within minutes any time he's sent to do anything.
  • Equippable Ally: Mop Girl wields Luci as a weapon against Cloyd and Becky, firing fireballs at them.
  • Escaped from Hell: Hansel and Gretel almost manage to do this, but the elevator stops at Dreamland just as Bean's coming to smash it with an axe, and she sends them plummeting right back down.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: After all his attempts to purposely spy on people end with him getting caught, Elfo ends up seeing Leavo drinking from the Trog's goo and turning into a Trog himself entirely by accident.
  • Fantastic Racism: The Elves and Trogs do not get along, which is ironic as this episode reveals they used to be the same species.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Bean's dream contains Trogs, Sea Trogs and elves swimming together, before the reveal at the end of the episode that Trogs were elves.
    • The Dagmar Bean chases in her dreams has Bean's hair rather than Dagmar's more well-groomed appearance, foreshadowing the reveal at the end of the next episode.
    • When Elfo infiltrates the Trog meeting, all the names given, like those of the elves, end with an -o.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The pan down the Dreamland Castle floors shows, among other things, the aftermath of the castle's bad clam festival (and one of the victims).
  • Genuine Human Hide: Or Trog skin in this case; Elfo disguises himself as a Trog wearing a shedded skin.
  • Hidden Depths: Zog has made his own brand of tea, designed to help people fall asleep easier. Though judging by what he says about using Vip and Vap to help flavor it, it doesn't taste terribly great.
  • Joke of the Butt: Apparently, one of the reasons the other elves hate Elfo is because of his frequent comments regarding his bum-bum. Later, when putting on the shedded Trog skin, Elfo pauses for a moment to admire his rear end.
  • Karmic Transformation: Maybe. Before Leavo drinks the Sacred Goo, the Trog leader warns him "it's not what you want, it's what you deserve."
  • Kill It with Fire: Miri the Mop Girl uses Luci as a makeshift flamethrower on Cloyd and Becky, sending them plummeting into the ocean beneath Dreamland.
  • Nightmare Sequence: Bean has several nightmares, most of them involving chasing her mother through the castle.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Elfo's disguise as Mustachio consists of only a moustache, and deepening his voice. It actually works, until his attempts to defend himself blow his cover and it gets pulled off.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Mop Girl gets one in on Cloyd and Becky.
Cloyd: You picked the wrong side of this fight, Mop Girl.
Mop Girl: It's Miri. (cue Luci being used as an improvised flamethrower)
  • Reflexive Remark of Reverence: The Trogs and the Sacred Goo.
  • The Reveal: The thing Leavo was searching underneath Dreamland Castle is the sacred Goo of the Trogs. Also, the Trogs are former Elves that were turned by the Goo.
  • Right on Queue: The guards make Zog and Jasper wait in line to see Bean.
  • Running Gag: Bean struggling, and failing, to get one of her boots off before going to bed.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Jasper and Derek do not get along and end up fighting for most of the episode, until they find a thing they have in common; their desire to throw Elfo down some stairs. To a lesser degree, Bean isn't too fond of Jasper either, but it doesn't go any further than her asking Zog to remove him from the room.
  • Skewed Priorities: What gives Elfo away to the Trogs is him learning Trixie has also slept with Superviso. Even though Elfo has previously been uninterested in her advances most of the time, he's still upset over this.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: After eating too many clams, Lucy ends up violently vomiting over Cloyd and Becky when his head is pulled off his body again.
  • We Need a Distraction: When confronted by the trogs, Rulo has Distracto distract them so Leavo can look at what is behind a door.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Bean steals Stan's axe to destroy the hellavator, much to the joy of the guy he was taking to behead. However, Stan reveals he has another, smaller axe prepared.
  • Your Answer to Everything: Bean, being woken up by Bunty throwing a bucket of water over her, tells Bunty she can't solve all her problems with buckets.
