Recap / Death Note – Ep. 35: Malice

Go To

Near requests a scheduled meeting with Light and the Task Force in three day's time at a remote warehouse. Light agrees, planning to kill Near when the time comes. The next day, however, Mello and his companion Matt kidnap Kiyomi Takada. Matt is gunned down by Takada's bodyguards while Mello takes Takada away in a truck. Takada uses a concealed piece of Death Note to kill Mello, then calls Light for help. The police make their way to the scene but find the truck in flames. Light used the Death Note piece in his watch to kill Takada by self-immolation.

Tropes used in this episode:

  • All for Nothing: Matt provoked a Chase Scene and was shot to death by Takada's bodyguards in order to give Mello an opening to expose Kira, only for Takada to kill Mello.
  • Bad Boss: Light's response to Takada's plea for help over the phone amounts to "Finish your job, lackey." He then kills her before the police can reach the scene.
  • Bodyguard Betrayal: Halle deliberately hands Takada over to Mello.
  • Destroy the Evidence: Light's reason for killing Takada by fire, as her Death Note piece is incinerated.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: Matt, who's final words are "You won't shoot-".
  • Killed Offscreen: Mello. His body is shown slumped over the steering wheel of the truck shortly after.
  • No Peripheral Vision: Invoked (sort of) by Light, as he comments on the convenience of the fact that he has the back seat of the car to himself, allowing him to write Takada's name and cause of death in his watch without Aizawa and Ide noticing.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Matt's violent death and only speaking scene. Crosses with We Hardly Knew Ye.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Mello NOT taking a bite out of his chocolate bar indicates he's about to start something he's really not looking forward to.
  • Psychic-Assisted Suicide: Light makes Takada kill herself by setting herself and everything around her on fire. She goes blank-eyed in a similar manner to Naomi Misora once the Death Note goes into effect.
  • Shameful Strip: Mello has Takada strip at gunpoint to see if she is hiding any Death Note pieces. Downplayed as he offers her a blanket to preserve her modesty. Unfortunately for him, this allows her to keep the piece that she was hiding.
  • Sore Loser: During a game against Mogi, Misa kicks the board when he makes his winning move.
  • Time-Compression Montage: A brief one at the beginning of the episode.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: Takada kept the concealed Death Note piece in her bra.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After Takada succeeds in killing Mello, one of the people who stood in the way of Light's goals, Light kills her and has her destroy the evidence.
  • You Wouldn't Shoot Me: When Matt is surrounded by Takada's bodyguards, he confidently boasts about them needing him alive for questioning. He's proven wrong when they all open fire on him.
