Recap / DEATH BATTLE! S03E11 - Amy Rose VS Ramona Flowers

Go To

Boomstick: As the old saying goes, "Behind every great man, is a badass woman with a big hammer", something like that.
Wiz: And today's combatants are exactly that, what could go wrong?
Boomstick: Amy Rose, Sonic the Hedgehog's #1 fangirl.
Wiz: And Ramona Flowers, the girl of Scott Pilgrim's dreams.

Season 3's 11th episode brings two more female warriors to the field, two love-struck hammer wielders who fight for their objects of affection.

First, the story of young Amy Rose. When she first heard of the adventurous Sonic the Hedgehog, Amy was immediately smitten. Using Tarot cards, she discovered she'd meet her hero on the mysterious "Little Planet". There, she was kidnapped by Doctor Eggman in a plan for world domination, but was still saved by the blue blur. It wasn't enough for Amy, she made it her mission to become Sonic's ally and girlfriend.

Learning to be skilled with her Piko Piko Hammer, Amy also unlocked her latent "Hedgehog speed gene" while running after Sonic, whose normal running speed sits around 765 mph. She isn't as fast, but she can at least keep up for a time and gained some of his skills like the Homing Attack and Spin Dash. Amy also gained the ability to be invisible. With her hammer, Amy can create small tornadoes and spin like a helicopter. Should her hammer be lost, she can somehow create a new one.

Amy is strong enough to match a 25 foot tall metal machine, dazed the Iron King, who tanked laser fire from an army, and once threw her hammer hundreds of feet into the air to knock Dr. Eggman's ship out of flight. She's also survived being crushed by a boulder in a fight with Knuckles, and defeated an entire army of robots on her own. However, she's still a tween, she's immature and often rushes into situations without thinking them through. She's also easily tricked by others, having once been mind-controlled by Justin Beaver. Still, when Amy wants something, she'll pursue it, no matter what...

Amy: Keep your rotten robots away from my Sonic, or you're gonna be sorry!

When Ramona Victoria Flowers first met Scott Pilgrim, she was... unimpressed. While she just wanted to do her job as a delivery girl for Amazon Canada, Scott was determined to be with the girl of his dreams (literally, since she travelled through a subspace that happened to pass through his dreams). He was eventually able to get her attention, but if he wanted to be her boyfriend, he had to deal with a certain problem... Ramona's seven Evil Exes. Fortunately, he didn't need to fight all of them alone.

Ramona's not exactly a damsel in distress, wielding a variety of weapons such as bats and swords, but her main one is a giant hammer. In the world of Scott Pilgrim, all weapons have stat bonuses, with her titanium bat giving her a +1 against blondes, and her hammer giving her a +2 against girls. She keeps her weapons in her purse, which is a Subspace Suitcase that leads to a pocket dimension inside her head, which she can alter with her emotions.

In a fight with her fourth Evil Ex from her "sexy phase", Roxy Richter, Scott was smashed upwards into steel I-beams in the ceiling. The force needed to bend them from Scott's impact would require at least 3,000 lbs, and Ramona has taken hits from Roxy without trouble. She fought off an army of jocks when she was only 12, and can send people flying into the air with her hammer. Her speed on her roller blades also let her be quick and nimble enough to deal with ninjas.

Unfortunately, Ramona has her fair share of problems. She acquired "The Glow" from Gideon Graves, her final Evil Ex, which is an energy field that turns her emotions against her. This caused problems for her and her relationship with Scott, making her very emotional. However, despite this, she remains the girl of Scott Pilgrim's dreams.

Ramona: Well then, Gideon best get his pretentious ass up here, cause I'm about to kick yours out of the great white north!

The combatants have been introduced, so it's time for... another ad for Blue Apron. But after that, it's time for a Death Battle!

At Lee's Palace in Toronto, Canada, Ramona is seen hanging out with her boyfriend, Scott Pilgrim, on the main stage. Scott's playing his bass while Ramona's kicking her legs back and forth.

The back door is opened, and Sonic the Hedgehog dashes through the room in a hurry, accidentally knocking Scott and Ramona off the stage in the process. Amy runs through the entrance after the Blue Blur, but gets angry when she realizes she's lost him. Ramona then wakes up dazed while Scott's still out cold and sees Amy at the entrance. Amy's anger is interrupted by Ramona leaping up to her trying to pound Amy with her hammer.

Amy leaps out of the way and gets furious with Ms. Flowers. She then takes out her Piko Piko hammer while Ramona remains in her stance.

FIGHT!

The two clash their hammers repeatedly, which lets off some shockwaves on the stage. Amy finally manages to get some hits in, but Ramona counters by swinging her Subspace Suitcase at her. Amy then dodges the last hit and uses her incredible speed to hit Ramona back and forth and combo Ms. Flowers to the back of the palace. Ramona summons her hammer back to her and challenges Ms. Rose to come at her.

An enraged Amy spin dashes towards Ramona at high speeds, Ramona barely ducking under it. Amy bounces off the wall in her ball state and back at Ramona, who tries to block it with her hammer. She almost succeeds, but the force of the attack tosses her into the arcade area. Amy catches up to Ramona and tries swinging her hammer at her, and Ramona dodges and counters the blows that cause damage to the arcade cabinets. Ramona manages to get close to Amy and punches her backward. Amy starts running forward with her hammer as Ramona's head starts glowing. Her swing is interrupted by Ramona's Subspace Suitcase, which sucks Amy inside. Ramona follows her opponent into the suitcase to continue the fight.

Amy wakes up in the suitcase surprised when she sees multiple copies of Ramona staring at her, but has her eyes set on the main one. Ramona sends her clones at Amy, who starts to get overwhelmed. Ramona starts walking away confidently, but Amy manages to defeat all her copies with one blow. Amy than dashes towards Ramona with a powerful hammer swing, which shatters Ramona's mallet. Ramona leaps back to avoid Amy's second swing, which hits the Subspace Suitcase and destroys it, bringing the two back to Lee's Palace.

Amy then spins up a large, pink tornado with her Piko Piko Hammer. It gets Scott stuck on the wall and starts sucking in all the arcade machines. Ramona is knocked into the whirlwind by a flying arcade stand and battered by the video game machines in the tornado. Amy then leaps into the tornado herself and jumps on the arcade games to get to her opponent, at which point she knocks her into the corner with a large hammer swing as the tornado dissipates. The damaged arcade cabinets start falling to the ground as Scott wakes up. He's horrified at Ramona's bloodied and beaten state on the floor right next to him. Amy then finishes the fight by knocking a large arcade game to Ramona's location, which crushes Ms. Flowers and converts her to coins.

K.O.!

Scott is seen crying as Ramona's spirit leaves her body, while Amy finds Sonic in the building and starts chasing after him again. While Ramona was the smarter and more level-headed, Amy's abilities helped her make up for it. While Ramona is pretty fast on her skates, Amy can keep up with Sonic, whose casual running speed sits at around 765mph. Note that she isn't as fast as Sonic, but she can at least catch up to him from time to time. And while both has impressive feats of strength, Amy's were just higher than Ramona's. While the weight of Amy's hammer is unknown, the largest sledgehammer ever forged weighed at 64 pounds. Assuming Amy's is around the same weight, she must able to use it with a power of two tons of force at minimum as shown when she threw her hammer at one of Eggman's flying mechs, at least 2,100 feet away in the air, hard enough to spin it around. Ramona can survive one and a half tons as shown by her ex Roxy's strength, while Amy survived being crushed by a boulder that weigh around 4 tons. Ramona's trump card was using her purse to trap Amy in her subspace, but just as Ramona's ex Gideon broke free by destroying the purse, Amy could do as well. With Ramona's trump card gone, all Amy had to do was finish her off.

Boomstick: Looks like Amy rose to the occasion.
Wiz: The winner is Amy Rose.

Next time on Death Battle...

Amy Rose vs. Ramona Flowers contains examples of:

  • Blood-Splattered Innocents: Scott is splattered with Ramona's blood after Amy crushes her with an arcade cabinet. He's understandibly horrified.
  • Death from Above: Amy finishes off Ramona by crushing her with an arcade cabinet.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Boomstick has a pained reaction to Wiz quipping that Amy was "hooked on Sonic's", claiming he threw up in his mouth. He also reacts with exasperation upon hearing Justin Beaver's Punny Name. When Wiz claims the author of Scott Pilgrim was on "heroine", Boomstick exclaims "What's with you today?!"
  • Mythology Gag: Amy destroys Ramona's Subspace Suitcase to escape the Subspace Highway, much like how Gideon did the same.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, the first time Boomstick met Wiz, the former had forgotten his pants. This isn't elaborated on.
  • Oh, Crap!: An accurate description of Ramona's face when she hears a crash shortly after ordering her emotional duplicates to gang up on Amy and turning her back.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When Boomstick mistakes "the glow" for something he has, he asks Wiz how long should one's genitals usually glow in the dark. Wiz responds, rather flatly, exactly zero seconds. Boomstick laughs it off and says it's good he doesn't have that problem. Wiz, not fooled, tells him to see a doctor.
  • Winged Soul Flies Off at Death: The post-fight animation shows Ramona's soul rising from the arcade machine she was crushed under, as Scott watches in tears.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Amy manages to destroy Ramona's hammer with one mighty swing.
