Recap / Darkwing Duck S 3 E 5 Steerminator

Go To

With the aid of F.O.W.L., Taurus Bulba comes back as a cyborg, seeking revenge towards Darkwing.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Darkwing when Bulba grabs Gosalyn and Honker.
  • Angst Coma: When she runs into the resurrected Taurus Bulba, Gosalyn goes catatonic for a minute, forcing Honker to take control of the vehicle they're both in. Considering what he did to her grandfather, it's perfectly understandable.
  • Berserk Button: The mere mention of Darkwing's name is this for Taurus Bulba. He is enraged to learn Darkwing survived the explosion.
  • Big Damn Heroes: As Bulba talks about how Darkwing would do anything to keep the kids from being harmed, Darkwing bursts into his lair and slams into him.
  • The Bus Came Back: Taurus Bulba comes back seasons later for the first and only time in the series.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: The storm Launchpad was making occurs just after Bulba was stopped. Even worse, it ended up reviving him.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • The paint that Gosalyn accidentally sprayed Honker with ends up coming in handy to help Darkwing locate them.
    • Bulba freezing up when his circuitry overheats ends up saving Darkwing at the last minute.
  • Continuity Nod: Plenty of the first episode.
  • Damsel in Distress: Gosalyn, who is abducted by Taurus Bulba (along with her friend Honker of course)
  • Didn't Think This Through: F.O.W.L really should've considered the idea that maybe Bulba didn't want to work for them. The same goes for making him too powerful for them to control if that was the case.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Averted. Bulba doesn't know why Darkwing is so concerned about the kids' safety (particularly Gosalyn), but he knows he can exploit it and use it to break Darkwing's resolve.
  • Fatal Flaw: Whenever Bulba really loses his temper his circuits overheats, resulting him to shutting down for a few seconds.
  • Faux Affably Evil: On display when Bulba meets up with Gosalyn and later Darkwing.
  • Flashback: Bulba recalls a montage of the opening two-parter while staring at the bridge.
  • Furry Reminder: Bulba gets one, snorting and pawing the ground much like a real bull before attacking Darkwing.
  • Guile Hero: Darkwing can't beat the new and improved Bulba (especially in his condition) head on, but he can outwit him and use assorted tricks to keep him off balance.
  • Handicapped Badass: Darkwing is in a wheelchair through the entire episode since he broke his legs, but he still manages to defeat Taurus Bulba.
  • It's All My Fault: Darkwing blames himself for the kids being captured because he didn't warn Gosalyn that Bulba was back when he had the chance.
  • No One Could Survive That!: After Bulba goes over the side and falls into the water, Darkwing expects him to drown, due to all the heavy robotics. However, Bulba reveals he has flight capability.
  • No Waterproofing in the Future: Invoked and averted. Darkwing's plan to stop Bulba was to lure him outside while Launchpad seeded clouds to make it rain, causing him to rust. This unfortunately backfires as not only is Bulba waterproof, but the rain occurs just after his circuits overheated, thus cooling him off and reviving him.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Rather than inform Gosalyn that Bulba was back, Darkwing tried to protect her by forcing her to stay in her room. It backfires big time.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: It's a pun on The Terminator.
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Needless to say, Darkwing really hoped that Taurus Bulba hadn't survived the ramrod explosionnote .
  • Resurrect the Villain: This is what F.O.W.L. does to Bulba in this episode.
  • Retail Riot: The reason Darkwing's legs are broken is because a ski shop sale got rough somehow; Launchpad tells him he's lucky only his legs got broken.
  • Sequel Hook: A planned one that didn't pan out as episode ends Tarus Bulba flying away declaring he'd be back. Unfortunately, the series ended before any such episode could be made.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After Tarus Bulba trashes the place and threatens to deal with them after Darkwing, Steelbeak suggests relocating to their facility in Miami.
  • Shout-Out:
  • "Take That!" Kiss: By Darkwing towards Bulba to distract him. His reaction is a Spit Take.
  • Understatement: Steelbeak says "Er...looks like we have a slight problem-o here!" when Taurus Bulba reveals that he is not going to follow F.O.W.L.'s orders.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: F.O.W.L saved Bulba and made him stronger than ever, only for him to turn against him. Of course, this is a bit of a case of Unwanted Assistance as they turned him into a cyborg without his say in the matter.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: Coupled with Back from the Dead, F.O.W.L., resurrects Taurus Bulba as a cyborg with the goal of having him work for them. He immediately turns on them afterwards.
  • We Will Meet Again: Bulba's last words are "I will be back".
  • The Worf Effect: Steelbeak gets easily defeated by Bulba after he betrayed F.O.W.L.
  • You Are Grounded!: Darkwing does this to Gosalyn to prevent Bulba from finding her. Needless to say, it blows up in his face.
