Recap / Darkwing Duck S 2 E 7 Tiff Of The Titans

Go To

Fenton Crackshell, A.K.A. Gizmoduck is asked by the army to protect a new, top-secret weapon displayed at the St. Canard Air Show, staying at Drake's house during that time. When Gizmoduck gets a hero's welcome in St. Canard, Darkwing becomes jealous, while at the same time Steelbeak concocts a plot to frame Darkwing in order to pit him and Gizmoduck against each other and allow him to steal the new weapon. Upon learning of Steelbeak's machinations, Gizmoduck and Darkwing must put aside their differences and work together to stop him.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Anachronic Order: This is Gizmoduck and Darkwing’s first meeting, but it takes place after their two other meetings.
  • Battle Discretion Shot: Played for Laughs. When Gizmoduck tackles Darkwing, we cut to Steelbeak's horrified expression as the battle rages offscreen. But then...
Steelbeak: Pitiful! I mean, what is this, a patty-cake playoff?!
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: After repeating that the E.G.R.E.T. can work on land, sea and air, Darking turns to the audience and affirms that they already knew this.
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: Both Drake and Fenton pull this when talking about their respective alter-egos.
  • The Cameo: Scrooge McDuck's face is prominently seen on the billboard Gizmoduck ducks behind to change back to Fenton.
  • Fun with Acronyms: E.G.R.E.T., in this case stands for Experiment General Retaliatory Transport.
  • Insult Backfire: After learning that Steelbeak turned them against each other, Gizmoduck admits that he was wrong about Darkwing, but still thinks his brand of crimefighting is "disreputable, disturbed, and possibly devious".
Darkwing: Well, from you, that's a compliment.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Fenton comes in after Drake has used his chair secret passage that connects his secret hideout to his house. Fenton asks where Drake has gone.
Launchpad: Oh. Uh... He went out for a spin. note
[Gosalyn and Honker glare at him in disgust]
  • Land, Sea, Sky: The E.G.R.E.T is able to work on land, water, and in the air.
  • Late to the Realization: Upon seeing Steelbeak, Gizmoduck cries out that he was stealing the E.G.R.E.T. Darkwing, who had been trying to tell him that the whole time, sarcastically says "Well, welcome to the program!".
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Steelbeak sets Darkwing and Gizmoduck against each other so he can continue his plans unhindered.
  • Living with the Villain: A variant. Fenton is staying at Drake's house and neither of them knowing each other's secret identity. Gizmoduck isn't really a villain and neither is Darkwing, but they spend most of the episode fighting because Steelbeak framed Darkwing.
  • Mythology Gag: When Fenton arrives to Darkwing's house, Launchpad makes this allusion to his past:
  • No Plans, No Prototype, No Backup: The E.G.R.E.T. is apparently the only one of its kind, which is why the military is so keen to protect it from F.O.W.L.
  • You Have Failed Me: After the Egg Men's first attempt to steal the E.G.R.E.T fails thanks to Gizmoduck, Steelbeak, who doesn't like excuses, has them stand at the end of a bowling lane and throws a ball at them, knocking outnote  three of them, leaving him with the remaining two for the rest of the episode.
Stealbeak: Make that two things I hate: excuses, and a seven-ten split!
