Recap / Darkwing Duck S 2 E 4 Fungus Amongus

Go To

A series of supernatural pizza topping thefts leads Darkwing to the place that is home to St. Canard's sole mushroom production: Macawber Manor. However, instead of keeping his thoughts on the case, he ends up falling for Morgana Macawber, the chair of the company.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Anachronic Order: This is technically Morgana's first meeting with Darkwing, even though it takes place late in the series.
  • Brainwashed: What Morgana wanted the board to think what she did to Darkwing.
  • But Now I Must Go: Morgana has to part ways from Darkwing at the end of the episode, though she chronologically returns in "Ghoul of My Dreams."
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Morgana is a businesswoman and a villainess (though her board of directors are worse).
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Launchpad saying he wanted a pizza made Darkwing realize that the connection to all the food thefts were that they were pizza toppings.
  • Expressive Ears: A variation; when Morgana introduces herself to Darkwing, his duck tail shakes left to right. (Granted, it was more than likely just a animation error.)
  • Heel–Face Turn: Morgana does this towards the end of the episode.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Launchpad tolerates Darkwing's rambling about Morgana for a while and then does a barrel roll with the Thunderquack to shake him out of it and get his mind back on the case.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: At least one of the board members has a interest in eating both Launchpad and Darkwing.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: Launchpad irritatedly asks how Darkwing's "creepy girlfriend" knew where the spiders had webbed him up. Darkwing objects to the word "creepy" before realizing Morgana shouldn't have known that.
  • I Warned You: The sarcastic way Launchpad says he feels sorry that Darkwing's Love Interest is a monster implies that it's more a way of saying "I told you so."
  • Love at First Sight: Darkwing is absolutely smitten the moment he lays eyes on Morgana. Morgana herself is also charmed by him fairly quickly.
  • Man-Eating Plant: The (literal) pizza mushrooms are these, due to an unfortunate side effect in their creation.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Lady Janus's "beautiful" personality is clearly modeled after Zsa Zsa Gabor, and Uncle Nero's voice is based on Peter Lorre.
  • Not So Harmless Punishment: Morgana tells Darkwing to throw Launchpad into the mushroom enclosure to get rid of him. Initially, Launchpad thinks this wouldn't cause anything worse than athlete's foot, but actually the mushrooms eat meat (due to a side effect of the plot du jour).
  • Only Shop in Town: Macawber Manor, Morgana's business, was the only mushroom supplier in St. Canard.
  • Portrait Painting Peephole: DW notices one of these. "As if I haven't seen this in a million movies!" He quips, removing the portrait and shouting "AH-HA!"... except the eyes gain bat-wings and fly away.
  • This Was His True Form: The board of directors revert into mushrooms after being exposed to sunlight. As Morgana points out, it was an unintended side-effect of her experimentations.
